Attributed to Ralph Earl, Sr. (Massachussetts/Connecticut, 1751-1801), three quarter length oil on canvas portrait of Tamar Boardman Taylor (1723-1795), wife of Rev. Nathaniel Taylor, attired in an 18th century black dress with lace cap and fichu and lace trimmed sleeves and black fingerless gloves. She is depicted seated in a red chair with red drape background to her left and village landscape visible through a window to her right, including a view of a church. Housed in a foliate-carved 20th century gilt wood frame. Sight - 47" H x 36 1/2" W. Framed - 54 1/2" H x 43 3/4" W. American, late 18th century. Biography & Provenance: Tamar Boardman Taylor was the daughter of Reverend Daniel Boardman and married Reverend Nathaniel Taylor (1722-1800) of New Milford, Connecticut in 1748/49. According to the book "History of the Towns of New Milford and Bridgewater, Connecticut, 1803-1882," Hartford, CT: Press of the Case, Lockward and Brainard Co, 1882, transcribed by Sandra Boudrou: "There are five large portraits of Mr. Taylor and his wife, painted by the artist Earl. He (Reverend Taylor) is represented in his pulpit with a small Bible in his hand. These portraits were in possession of the great grandson, George Taylor of Milford". The Newark Museum of Newark, New Jersey has one of the portraits of Mrs. Nathaniel Taylor by Ralph Earl (identical to this painting, including size) and the Addison Gallery of American Art of Andover, Massachusetts, is believed to have one of the Earl portraits of Rev. Nathaniel Taylor. Earl was known to have painted at least 19 members of the Boardman family and several members of the Taylor family. The Newark Museum is aware of at least one painting that is nearly identical to the one in their collection, possibly this one. At the time they were made aware of it (in 1970), it was owned by a New Jersey dealer. This painting was discovered in a Texas estate and its provenance prior to then is unknown. Biography: Ralph Earl began his portrait painting career near his home of Worcester County, Mass., but - loyal to the British Crown - he went to London during the Revolutionary War. He studied with Benjamin West and exhibited at the Royal Academy. There his drawing improved and his compositions became more complex, and his use of color became more sophisticated. He also experimented in England with different formats and introduced landscapes and complex interiors into the backgrounds of his portraits. These would become signature features of his later American work. The final period of his life included three years' residence in New York City and thirteen years as a traveling artist in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, and Vermont. Earl is best recognized for portraits that include landscape settings specifically related to the lives of his sitters or interiors decorated with furniture, professional attributes, books, and other possessions that help to individualize his patrons' identities. The artist's brother James Earl (1761-1796), son Ralph E. W. Earl (1785/88-1838), and nephew Augustus Earl (1793-1838) were artists as well. He worked as a portrait painter in New Haven where he was greatly influenced by the portraits of John Singleton Copley. He was a loyalist so in 1778 he fled to England, working first in Norfolk and then in the studio of Benjamin West. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1783 and 1784. In 1785, after the American Revolution, he returned to America, settling in New York. He built up a substantial pratice, becoming one of the first American artists to travel to Niagara Falls.

Jared Lane kept a detailed account book that documents the construction of a new house or wing on the property he had acquired in 1789 from his father-in-law, Lazarus Ruggles. Lane's property in the Still River Neck section of New Milford, later called Lanesville, was located several miles south of the town center. According to the account book, John Couch contracted to build "the Northern part of the House" as well as a "Waggon House" beginning in January 1791, and work was completed at the end of 1792. There are various references in his records to the "new house" or the "northern" part of the house and the "old" or "southern" part of the house. It is unclear whether Lane simply built a large addition to the original Orange Warner farm or whether he built a new house nearby on the property. Earl created a picturesque setting for his landscape of the Lane house, conveying some of the pretensions of English country-house painting. The house is carefully rendered, including the Palladian features that relate it stylistically to both the Canfield house (cat. 54) and the Boardman house (cat. 58). A cupola crowns the top. The house is set back from the surrounding landscape, with the Housatonic River winding across the foreground. There are well-maintained fields, recently planted trees, and in front of the house, a white post fence running along the road. In the distance are gently rolling hills, typical of the region. The landscape remained in the Ruggles-Lane house, which was inherited by Jared and Apphia Lane's three children. Their daughter, Maria Apphia, lived in the house with her husband, Dr. Amaziah Wright. The house, with the landscape, descended in the Wright family until 1948, when Kennedy Galleries of New York sold the landscape to a private collection. Excerpted from Elizabeth M. (sight) NOTES "in this age of refinement the well-born and well-bred of his countrymen will patronize him in the road to fame" read a notice regarding the portrait paintings of Ralph Earl symbolizes a landed and accomplished gentleman in a new republic, printed in Weekly Monitor, June 21, 1790. Litchfield, Connecticut. Dated 1796, this portrait of a gentleman was painted in the third and most accomplished period of Ralph Earl's career. Born in Worcester County, Massachusetts in 1751, Ralph Earl married in 1774 and began to establish himself as an artist. The second phase of his career began when Earl fled to England during the Revolutionary war. Arriving in England in April, 1778 Earl applied for financial relief claiming he provided information to the British Army which prevented it from being attacked in Long Island in 1777. His request for financial aid was denied, and he turned to painting to gain an income. In 1783 he had a London address and participated in an exhibition at the Royal Academy. During this time he became acquainted with Benjamin West and his artistic style became more fully developed. His technique greatly improved, his portraits became more complex, integrating detailed landscapes and sophisticated use of color. Earl is best recognized for portraits like the one pictured here, in which the landscape settings and other attributes relate to the lives of the sitter. Marking the third phase of his career, Earl returned to America in 1785. After a failed attempt to establish himself as a studio artist Earl was forced to pursue an itinerant career. Once again the artist found himself in financial trouble and landed in debtor's prison in New York from September 1986 to January 1788. While incarcerated several New York officials, many of whom had also been Loyalists during the War, commissioned portraits, enabling Earl to earn money and this gained him his release from prison. After his release, the artist established a prolific itinerant business concentrating in Northwest Connecticut. Earl died in Bolton, Connecticut in 1801, the cause listed as intemperance. Dated 1796, this portrait possibly depicts Gabriel Verplank Ludlow, a descendant of the current owner. The Banyer-Ludlow family in which this portrait descended has a long association with Westchester county. The family is associated with Cornell's Neck, a tract of land near the mouth of the Bronx, which may be the subject's landholding pictured in the background of this portrait.
