          Charles Locke Eastlake (1836-1906), a Gothic Revival walnut library bookcase, c.1870, in two sections, the upper section with a buttressed cornice, the cornice enclosing a hatch with a pyramidic protrusion carved with a trefoil detail, the upper section with three shelves, each with a gilt leather fringe, the lower tier with a pair of cupboard doors over two graduated shelves, raised on compass supports, 152cm wide 38cm deep 232cm high Provenance: The Estate of Max Clendinning and Ralph Adron, purchased by Ralph at Junk City, Hammersmith, 15 April 1971, for £35.00. Exhibited: Camden Arts Centre, 'The Aesthetic Movement 1860-1890', August - October 1973. Sir Charles Lock Eastlake (British, 1793-1865) was a prominent figure in the 19th century British art world, while he did paint in the Neoclassical style as a student under historical painter and writer Benjamin Robert Haydon, he is better known for his significant efforts as a director of the National Gallery in London. In the painting titled Portrait of a Woman Reading a Letter, Eastlake uses light to depict a woman in a private, quiet moment as she glances upon a folded letter. This lot was formerly the property of well-known real estate developer Mr. Melvin Simon and his wife, Bren Simon. It is part of the Simon's Asherwood Estate which Mrs. Simon most graciously has gifted to the non-profit Great American Songbook Foundation on whose behalf it is being sold.
