    Mar. 16, 2024

Michael Eastman, St. Louis, Missouri (b. 1947), Staré Mêsto, Prague, Photograph, ed. 1/25

    Est: $1,500 - $2,000

Michael Eastman St. Louis, Missouri, (b. 1947) Staré Mêsto, Prague Photograph, ed. 1/25 Signed with title, framed. Michael Eastman (born in St. Louis, 1947) has established himself as one of the world's leading contemporary photographers. He has spent five decades documenting interiors and façades in a variety of cities, including Prague (seen here), just after the Velvet Revolution (when the nation peacefully transitioned from Communism to Democracy, 1989). This large-scale photograph of a detail of this important cultural city located in the heart of Europe brings forth precision, monumentality, and a painterly sensitivity for nuanced, subtle and neutral colors. Eastman is recognized for his explorations of architectural form and the textures of decay, which create mysterious narratives about time and place. Imagine what goes on behind this fantastic pair of old-world wooden French doors framed by a monumental stone torso and various stone carvings within the PRAŽSKŸ ÚSTAV PAMÁTKOVÉ PÉCE (Prague Institute of Monument Care). Here, within its own monumental palace, is where Prague's extraordinary civic material heritage is catalogued, examined, studied by scholars, maintained, restored and preserved—e.g. the 9th c. Prague Castle, the 14th c. Charles Bridge, the massive medieval Astronomical Clock, The Church of St. Nicholas where Mozart played, and all of buildings and sculptures located within the Staré Mêsto (the Old Town, also as seen in the red address plate here). This building is where an understanding and promotion of what is deemed to be the cultural wealth of the Czech Republic is established and maintained. Eastman's work has appeared in Time, Life, Art in America, Art News, Art Forum, Communication Arts and American Photographer; it is present in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the International Center of Photography, The Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and other institutions. For more interior shots, see his _Vanishing America_ (2008, Rizzoli).

Michael Eastman American (Missouri), b. 1947 Gaskill's Chromogenic print Signed in pencil lower right, titled lower left, edition 1/50 lower center. Storefront scene displaying lingerie, American flags, and a pincushion doll situated in the doorway, missing her hoop skirt. Matted behind glass, ebonized frame. About the artist: Michael Eastman's photographic career began in his early 20's after reading The Daybooks of Edward Weston and practicing Ansel Adams' zone system. Always intrigued by surface, patina, and color, he began by taking black and white pictures of abstract patterns on walls in his now signature formalist style. He once stated "I do get in front of things and look at them straight on. Partly that's from Weston, partly from Evans – and my love of painting and the idea of it, the flatness." ?? Eastman's oeuvre is diverse, spanning sumptuous Italian interiors, decrepit American ghost towns, and expansive Midwestern landscapes. He is most well known for his vibrant and haunting images of Havana, Cuba, which he has photographed over the course of five trips beginning in the late 1990's. A common theme present throughout his work is historic preservation and the depiction of places marking human activity but devoid of the actual inhabitants. His rich color palette, geometric precision, and elevation of setting to subject continues to transport the viewer to a different place and time.?? Michael Eastman was born in 1947 in St. Louis, Missouri, and studied at the University of Wisconsin. He was the recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts grant, the National Addy Award, and a Paris Photo BMW Prize Finalist. His work is in numerous private and public collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago, IL, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, GA, the International Center of Photography, NY, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA and the Saint Louis Art Museum, MO. He has had solo exhibitions at the Barry Friedman Gallery, NY, the University of Wyoming, WY, the Kemper Museum in Kansas City, MO, and McKissick Museum, Columbia, SC. His publications include Havana (Prestel, 2011), Vanishing America (Rizzoli, 2008), and Horses (Knopf, 2003), which is now in its fifth edition. Eastman's photographs have appeared in Art In America, Art News, New York Times, Communications Arts, American Photographer and Time Magazine. He currently lives and works in St. Louis, Missouri.
