Charles Frederick Eaton (1842-1930) guest book for Mrs. John H. Hanan, also known as Edith Evelyn Hanan, at Shore Acres, Narragansett Pier, Rhode Island, 1904 Santa Barbara, California, 1904 natural suede, hammered copper, abalone, vellum, ink, paint, paper signed, clasp engraved "E.E.H. 1904" possibly illustrated by Robert Wilson Hyde (1875-1930) 11 1/4"w x 1 1/4"d x 16 1/4"h Literature: A similar example may be seen in: Burton, Elizabeth Eaton, My Santa Barbara Scrap Book, Santa Barbara Historical Museum, 2011, p. 77 Catalog Note: Edith Evelyn Hanan (1871-1920) was an important and prominent figure in the history of Narragansett Pier who led a dramatic life during the Gilded Age. As a socialite and philanthropist, she was passionately involved in local and nationwide social affairs. The Shore Acres, previously named Suwanee Villa, was one of her estates she had purchased in 1900 that truly tied her to her hometown of Narragansett Pier for the rest of her life. It was after her marriage to John H. Hanan (1849-1920), a successful business tycoon and yachtsman — their wedding took place at Shore Acres on April 15, 1903, that the couple held numerous luxurious benefits, dinners and balls for their equally influential guests at their estates, including Shore Acres. During World War I, Edith Hanan was appointed the chairwoman of the American National Defense Society of Rhode Island and also the chairwoman for the Welcome the Boys Home Committee after the war. According to local historian John W. Miller Jr., Edith Hanan's personality traits can be described as "intelligent, literate, articulate and charming [...] outspoken, audacious, free-spirited and independent-minded."
