Provenance: Robert Schoelkopf Gallery, New York, with the label; Rosenfeld Fine Art, New York; private collection, New York. Exhibited: "One Hundred Years: A Centennial Celebration of the National Association of Women Artists," Nassau County Museum of Art, Roslyn, New York, October 16-December 31, 1988, with the label. Eaton (1893-1968) was born in East Orange, New Jersey and attended Smith College, Columbia University, and classes at the Art Students League in New York. Eaton exhibited at several New York galleries, and regularly showed her work at the National Association of Women Artists annual exhibition. The current painting was entered for consideration for the 1948 show, but according to the publication, was not exhibited.

She studied at Smith College, Columbia University, and at the Art Students League in New York City with Kenneth Hayes Miller. The artist was a member of the Society of Independent Artists and the National Association of Women Artists. Dorothy Eaton became a committed painter of the American Scene and exhibited widely. She was included in exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago, Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, Corcoran Gallery in Washington DC and the National Academy of Design in New York City. During her career working at Smith College, Dorothy Eaton spent most of her life in Massachusetts painting rural scenes with figures. Her colors were bright and bold and her depictions were simple yet iconic. Dorothy Eaton died in Chattam, New Jersey in 1968.
