      Joseph Oriel Eaton American 1829-1875 Woman in White, 1867 Signed with artist's monogram and dated (lr) Oil on canvas 42 1/8 x 29 3/4 inches (107 x 75.6 cm) (Framed: 54 1/2 x 42 1/2 inches) Wax relined. There is a 1 x 1 spot of inpainting in the background above the subject's head. A few other smaller spots of inpainting are present, one in the subjects check and another in the lace near the bottom edge in the center.

      Joseph Oriel Eaton (1829-1875) Portrait of Judge David Kirkpatrick Este, Sr. (1785-1876), dated "1862" Signed and dated, "J.O. Eaton 1862," l.r., oil on canvas, framed. (45 in. x 54 1/2 in. (sight)) Provenance An educational institution. Note Este was born in New Jersey and served for many years as an Ohio State Supreme Court Judge from Cincinnati. Joseph Oriel Eaton, a portrait and landscape painter, depicts the Judge before an impressive view of the Ohio River. Eaton was born in Ohio but studied painting in New York City and Indianapolis. He worked in Indianapolis, Cincinnati and New Orleans before moving his studio permanently to New York City from Cincinnati in 1864. He frequently exhibited at the National Academy of Design. Relined, overall measurements 51 in. x 61 in.

      FLASH, CASH & CO. BY JOSEPH ORIEL EATON (OHIO, 1829-1875). Oil on canvas, signed lower left. Disheartened young boy seated on a crate with a broken jackknife wedged in a board. Some professional restoration. 17"h. 14"w., in a modern gilt frame, 22 1/2"h. 19 1/2"w. Ex Sumpter Priddy III (Virginia). The charming boy depicted here may be modeled after the artist's son, Frank Miller Eaton. Eaton painted a portrait of the boy in 1870 and the similarities are apparent. The portrait is illustrated in Cincinnati Art Museum, Exhibition of Paintings by Joseph Oriel Eaton and Sculpture by Hiram Powers , catalog number 14. Eaton was perhaps best-known for his genre pictures with children. For information on Eaton, see Haverstock et al, Artists in Ohio, 1787-1900 , pp. 255-6.
