      • C. ECHARD (1748-1810), Sitting man with hat, 1782, Etching
        Jul. 27, 2024

        C. ECHARD (1748-1810), Sitting man with hat, 1782, Etching

        Est: €750 - €1,000

Charles Echard (1748 Caen - 1810 Paris): Seated man with hat, possibly a self-portrait, 1782, Etching Technique: White heightened Etching on Paper (blue) Inscription: lower left signed in the printing plate: "Echard". Lower right dated: "1782". Date: 1782 Description: Very little is known about the life and work of Charles Echard (sometimes spelt "Eschard"). Even the dates of his life are only approximations. In 1773, he became a professor in Paris at the Ecole de dessin pour les amateurs et les artistes dèbutantes. He travelled to Holland and Savoy. In 1783 he was denied admission to the Paris Academy despite the intercession of its director Jean-Baptiste Pierre. In 1791, he took part in a petition in favour of artists who were not members of the Academy being considered for public commissions. Even if it is not known whether this etching is actually a self-portrait by the artist, it is reasonable to assume that it is, as the composition and clothing are very similar to Rembrandt's etching Self-Portrait with Saskia from 1638. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has a second copy of the plate, which is printed on light-coloured paper and does not show any subsequent white heightening. The New York print is probably the second state, as the basic composition has remained unchanged, but clear additions can be recognised in the dense line layers. Echard appears to have covered almost the entire plate with a denser hatching. He also redrew the signature and the border several times in comparison to our sheet. It can therefore be assumed that the present impression on blue paper with the white heightening is to be regarded as a proof. Keywords: French, Artist, Self-portrait, Fashion, Costume, 18th century, Classicism, Portraits, France, Size: Paper (blue): 15,0 cm x 10,3 cm (5,9 x 4,1 in), Depiction: 11,7 cm x 9,0 cm (4,6 x 3,5 in)

Charles Echard, 1748 - 1810 "Le Four" (The oven), Oil on panel, Signed "Echard", Inscribed on the reverse "A Monsieur Le Comte ...", The Four Banal, or communal oven, has been a part of daily life in France since medieval times. They were built by the local aristocratic landlord for the use of the villagers for the purpose of bread-making. The landlord did not however provide this facility out of a sense of pro bono publico but charged a levy for their daily use. In parts of France, to this day, the Four Banal provides a focal point for community celebrations. Charles Echard came from Caen. He was a noted draughtsman, etcher and painter. Works by Charles Echard can be seen in The Cabinet des Dessins at The Louvre Museum, Paris. In 1984 a retrospective exhibition of his works was held at the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Caen. 8¼ x 10 inches 21 x 25.5 cm.
