Eckley pinxt, l.r.; depicting a gentleman facing left in a black jacket and black cravat ; 3 1/2 x 2 7/8 inches; case: 5 x 4 1/2 inches Provenance: Frederick Goddard Tuckerman; Frederick Tuckerman II; Margaret Tuckerman Clark; by descent to current owner Other Notes: This sitter appears to be the same gentleman depicted in Lot 7 by Nathaniel Rogers, and bears a strong resemblance to her father, Edward Tuckerman (see lot 4). Sophia May Tuckerman Eckley was the daughter of Boston merchant Edward Tuckerman III and the sister of writer Frederick Tuckerman and botanist Edward Tuckerman. An artist and writer, Sophia married David Eckley in 1848, and spent much of her time abroad in Italy and France.
