OTTO ECKMANN (Hamburg 1865 - 1902 Badenweiler) Night herons color woodcut/paper 13,3 x 24,5 cm monogrammed OE SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 250 - 450 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 250 Otto Eckmann was a German painter, graphic artist and typographer of the Art Nouveau style. Eckmann completed a commercial apprenticeship and then studied at the trade school in Hamburg and the arts and crafts school in Nuremberg (today the Nuremberg Academy of Fine Arts). He then attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1883. He worked as a painter until 1894. Eckmann later turned to graphic design and designs for handicrafts, especially carpet weaving. Eckmann was inspired by Walter Crane and was one of the main representatives of the floral style of Art Nouveau. He initially devoted himself to landscape painting, but later worked mainly as a designer and graphic artist. He created titles and ornaments for the magazines “Pan” and “Jugend” as well as the logo of the S. Fischer Verlag. As an employee of the Scherrebek art weaving school, he created “one of the coats of arms of Art Nouveau” with the “Five Swans” wall hanging. In 1899, on behalf of Karl Klingspor, the head of the Rudhard type foundry in Offenbach, Eckmann drew a new alphabet for type printing. In doing so, he created the Eckmann typeface named after him, which is still the most commonly used Art Nouveau font today. Around 1902 he designed collector's pictures for the Cologne chocolate producer Ludwig Stollwerck for a fee of 1,000 marks. Otto Eckmann was married to Mascha von Kretschman, Lily Braun's sister. He died of tuberculosis at the age of 36 during a spa stay in Badenweiler (then Grand Duchy of Baden, now State of Baden-Wuerttemberg). The black-crowned night-heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), or black-capped night-heron, commonly shortened to just night-heron in Eurasia, is a medium-sized heron found throughout a large part of the world, including parts of Europe, Asia, and North and South America. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.

The image measures 25.4 x 11.2 cm, the sheet 49.2 x 32 cm. Otto Eckmann (1865-1902) Born in Hamburg the artist Otto Eckmann is one of the main representatives of Art Nouveau. He studied at the art schools in Hamburg and Nuremberg and graduated in painting at the Munich Academy. He initially worked as a landscape painter, but operated later mainly as designers and graphic artist among others for the Journals PAN and ‘Jugend’. He also designed the logo of S. Since the mid 1890s however he turned his back on academic painted a. distinguishes himself as the leading exponent of a floral Art Nouveau. He worked in Munich for the magazines 'Jugend' a. 'Pan' but kept in touch with Hamburg through J. Brinckmann - director of the arts a. crafts museum - a. through the Scherrebek weaving school. In 1897 he moved to Berlin a. worked as teacher for ornamental graphics at the arts a. crafts museum; in 1989 he was co-founder of the Munich secession. Eckmann, Otto: Stehender weiblicher Akt

Stehender weiblicher Akt mit erhobenen Armen. Kohle, leicht gewischt, über Bleistift auf JWZanders-Bütten. 49,5 x 32 cm. Unten rechts monogrammiert (?). Um 1894. Bis um 1894 betätigte sich Otto Eckmann in erster Linie als Maler, wandte sich dann jedoch der Gestaltung gebrauchsgraphischer Blätter zu. Schöne Aktdarstellung einer in der Zimmerecke stehenden Frau, den linken Arm hinter den Kopf erhoben. Das Monogramm ist nur schwach zu erkennen, deutet aber auf eine Urheberschaft Eckmanns hin. Verso eine weitere Aktskizze.
