JOHN ECKSTEIN (BRITISH 18TH/ 19TH CENTURY)

      Est: £200 - £300

JOHN ECKSTEIN (Exh. R.A. 1787-1802) Portrait of General Wale Signed lower right Eckstein 1815 Watercolour 31 x 21.5cm (12 x 8 1/2in) Footnote: John Eckstein was the son of the German born sculptor, engraver and painter Johann Eckstein (1735-1817). John was a painter who exhibited at the Royal Academy in London between 1787 and 1802. In 1803 he accompanied Samuel Hood to the "Diamond Rock" near Martinique. He then went to Barbados where he painted portraits of officers stationed on the island, and seems to have died in the West Indies in about 1838.  Charles Wale (16 August 1765 – 20 March 1845) was an English General and the last British governor of Martinique between about 1812 and 1815. On 25 February 1831 he was appointed Colonel of the 33rd Regiment of Foot  and was given the governorship in recognition of his capture of Guadeloupe from the French. He was later knighted for his service.
