        Dec. 02, 2023

Victorio Edades (1895 - 1985) - Lady in Maria Clara (Juliet Reyes)

        Est: ₱4,000,000 - ₱5,200,000

PROPERTY FROM A VERY DISTINGUISHED COLLECTOR Lady in Maria Clara (Juliet Reyes) signed and dated 1978 (lower right) oil on canvas 38” x 32” (97 cm x 81 cm) EXHIBITED The Museum of Philippine Art, Edades in Retrospect: 1927 to 1980, Manila, April - June 1980. LITERATURE Letters of request to loan the artwork for the Edades In Retrospect, from the Museum of Philippine Art Director Arturo R. Luz, the artist himself Victorio Edades and the curator, Petty Benitez. WRITE UPIf we are to pick one figure to put at the forefront of the modernist movement in the Philippines, Victorio Edades would perhaps be the best choice. Spending a good chunk of his younger years in the United States as a worker, Edades eventually ventured out into the art world, earning a Master of Fine Arts in Painting at the University of Washington in Seattle. In the US, he came across a traveling exhibition of several European surrealists which included masters like Pablo Picasso, Paul Gauguin, and other surrealists. This exhibit steered his interests away from the classical academic art that pervades contemporary Philippine art and into modernism. This affinity for modernism is evident when he came back to the Philippines in 1928, where he shocked the art world with an exhibit featuring his distorted figures and his unconventionally somber color palette. In an era full of austere paintings, bright colors, and outstanding balance, Edades’s unorthodox art resonated for years to come despite not selling a single painting at the time. In this 1978 portrait, Edades portrays a classic Filipina in his signature muted color scheme. Portraits are an integral part of Edades’s portfolio and he has the medium mastered. Painted with a mottled green background, the subject – a young woman – sits on a yellow chair and is dressed in a plain white Filipiniana. Combined with the woman’s warm brown skin and her gold accessories, the viewer’s eyes are drawn straight to the cool white figure. The subject demands undivided attention, striking quite a powerful presence and is a clear testament of Edades’s genius. (Hannah Valiente)

Muslim Waving Goodbye signed and dated 1982 (lower right) oil on canvas 38 1/2" x 33" (98 cm x 84 cm) PROVENANCE: Genluna Gallery, Davao City Among the pioneers of Filipino Modernism, one individual arguably holds the title of having truly pushed the movement and the boundaries of art forward. Often hailed as the father of Philippine modern art, Edades subversive philosophy was a result of the artist’s desire to go beyond the dominance of classic and genre scenes that dominated the local art scene during his time. Edades challenged traditional artistic norms, introduced modern techniques, and inspired generations of Filipino artists to explore new artistic expressions. This desire was further exacerbated by his studies abroad. This exposure to international art played a crucial role in shaping Edades' artistic vision and fueling his desire to LEFT: Edades in front of Modern Art Museum. RIGHT: A sticker from GenLuna Gallery is attached verso. break away from the confines of conventionalism. Edades introduced a radical artistic approach that challenged the prevailing academic style. He rejected the romanticized depictions of Philippine landscapes and traditional subject matter, instead embracing a more realistic and critical representation of Filipino society. This particular piece is emblematic of that novel approach to art. Wherein older schools and disciplines of art were focused on recreation, Edades wanted to push the limits of the medium. Effectively creating works that went against tradition and fostered a much more critical disposition towards the role of art in society and perhaps even in life. (J.D.)

Victorio Edades (1895 - 1985) En Route to Cebu

        Est: ₱600,000 - ₱780,000

PROPERTY FROM THE LLITA TORRALBA LOGARTA COLLECTION En Route to Cebu signed and dated 1971 (lower right) oil on masonite board 24" x 28" (61 cm x 71 cm) PROVENANCE Acquired directly from the artist Our mother was very much drawn to Edades’ night scene of passengers in slumber aboard a ship sailing for Cebu. The painting evoked memories of our family trips to Cebu, our father’s hometown, aboard the Sweet Faith, the finest ship of Sweet Lines, the most popular inter island shipping lines at the time. Our oldest brother Luis remembers trips to Cebu in the 1970s on the Sweet Faith, which, he said, once navigated the fjords of Norway. The sleeping human forms on white cots depict the typical scene in third class berth of the ship. My sister and I remember sleeping on exactly those same cots with our yayas. It was more fun out there than in the first class cabins. On the deck, the winds whipped; and the night sky was full of stars. Our mother loved the night for the quiet and mystery it held. And that, plus happy memories of journeys past, came to fore in this Edades painting. But most of all, she loved this painting because it took her to Cebu, a place she and our father loved.

        Est: ₱3,000,000 - ₱3,900,000

Victorio Edades (1895 - 1985) The Elegant Debutante signed and dated 1963 (lower right) oil on wood 78" x 48" (198 cm x 122 cm) Painted from the Heart of the Artist Edades Presents a Gift to a Debutante by LISA GUERRERO NAKPIL Victorio Edades would be anointed in 1976 as the Father of Philippine Modern Art with his recognition as National Artist. It would require him to travel four long decades from the time he was given his first commission in 1936 by the architect Juan Nakpil for the Rufino’s film palace, the Capitol Theater. He would recruit for it, a protege, Carlos Botong Francisco and his best friend, Galo Ocampo. The mural was called, suitably, “Rising Philippines” and would establish them as a triumvirate of modern art with voices to be reckoned with. Edades would eventually settle in at the University of Santo Tomas where he established not only the Department of Architecture but also the College of Fine Arts, recruiting like-minded individuals for the faculty — Manansala, for one — and teaching many other future stars including Nena Saguil, Anita Magsaysay Ho. He would become the art world’s beloved and eternal mentor — at one point, even becoming the president of the Philippine Art Gallery, the country’s first gallery dedicated to the cause of abstract art. At the UST he would also school entire generations of Filipinos with a sense of culture and the arts; and it is also here where he would meet Miss Carmen Kierulf Fletcher, to whom he made a gift of this painting. “Edades was her professor,” her family recalls, “and he treated her like she was his favorite student.” One day, as family lore has it, when she was in the studio of Edades, she admired a very large painting of his. He told her that the title was “Elegant Debutante” and gave her the painting, going so far as personally delivering it to the family residence in Retiro, La Loma, Quezon City. It would thenceforth have a place of honor in their home since Miss Fletcher much admired Edades and loved the painting very much since it reminded her of her professor and represented his kindness towards her during her UST days. The work at hand is of a bare-shouldered young lady dressed in the purest of white with two roses decorating the frock; one is in full bloom, the other is only just beginning to blossom. She carries a traditional debutante’s bouquet of more red roses in her right hand. The fullness of the figure has the sensibility of Cezanne’s figures that Edades would introduce to Manila when he first returned to Manila, brimming with the notion of modern art. It is the perfect paean to a young woman Edades admired, embellished with a title he himself chose.

Edades was one of a long line of OFWs — Filipino Overseas Workers who had immigrated to the United States to work, to can fish in particular, settling in Seattle where he found the climate relatively mild. And then something happened : he discovered Cezanne, Gauguin and Diego Rivera — then decided to come home. He was stunned that Filipino art at the time was dominated by Fernando Amorsolo and his tribe and in 1928, put together what was thought to be the first exhibition of modern art. It was nothing short of remarkable although Edades said that it did not make a ripple. The art cognoscenti did not know exactly what to think: There were no brightly lit landscapes, no lithe women nor smiling dalaga. Instead, Edades painted solid, substantial figures, in dour colors, browns, tans and earth colors. It would take him nearly 8 years to make a dent, when the winds of change would blow into the country; A new constitution in 1935, the inauguration of the commonwealth in the following year, and the prospect of self-governance, suffrage granted to women. These were exciting times indeed. He was given in 1936 his first commission by the architect Juan Nakpil for the Rufino’s film palace, the Capitol Theater. He would recruit for it, a protege, Carlos Botong Francisco and his best friend, Galo Ocampo. It was called, suitably, “Rising Philippines.” It would establish them as a triumvirate of modern art, voices to be reckoned with and their platform was the most-visited location in Manila. Edades would eventually settle in at the University of Santo Tomas where he established not only the Department of Architecture but also the College of Fine Arts, recruiting likeminded individuals for the faculty — Manansala, for one — and teaching many other future stars including Nena Saguil, Anita Magsaysay Ho, he would become the art world’s beloved and eternal mentor — at one point, even becoming the president of the Philippine Art Gallery, the country’s first gallery dedicated to the cause of abstract art. In 1976, on March 4, 1976 to be exact, he would have his 5th solo show — and “only his fifth” considering that his very first had been almost 50 years or half a century before — held at the Metro Gallery in Makati. It was an auspicious date since on opening night he received word that he would be named the fifth National Artist for the Visual Arts. It has also remained in a single collector’s hands until fairly recently : That of Mr. Vicente Puyat. Poinsettia Girl has become one of Edades’ most iconic works: It has been documented in multiple works and was the star of the ‘Edades in Retrospect” at the Museum of Philippine Art in 1980. It features an unsmiling woman who is however festooned, impervious, to the flowers of Christmas, also known as the pascua, that surround her. The intense ruby color is repeated in her frock and maquillage. The poinsettia, which came to the Philippines like Edades from across the seas, is originally from Mexico and traveled here on the Manila galleons. The legend goes that it was an offering of a poor boy to the Child Jesus on Christmas day, not finding a suitable gift, he cut a branch of a plant on his way to church. As he laid it at the feet of the Child, the plant’s leaves turned bright red, the stars twinkled and lit up the entire village. The same can be said for Edades’ gift to Philippine modern art. Through his teachings and mentorships, he would “create the environment for Modern Art, pre-figuring in theory as well as in practice the “reigning ‘international style’ of contemporary Philippine painting.” His citation for National Artist reads further, “ending decisively the isolation of Philippine art from the currents of International culture;” he would put together a group that he called the Thirteen Moderns… he would be the hub that connected the spokes of the wheel of modern Philippine art — and “would live to see Philippine painting transformed through his teachings.” That group would inspire Robert Chabet, the next-gen mentor who would found the 13 Artist Awards for the CCP and blaze new trails and forge new visions. It was after all, Edades greatest contribution — like the poinsettia brought light to that birth, was his emphasis on new perceptions as the true spirit of art.

Kargadores at Davao Port signed and dated 1980 (lower right) oil on canvas 28 1/4" x 26" (72 cm x 66 cm) PROVENANCE: Liongoren Gallery, Quezon City THE DOCK WORKERS OF DAVAO PAINTED BY THE FIRST MODERNIST, VICTORIO EDADES Heralded as the “Father of Philippine Modern Art”, Victorio Edades’ works signified an epochal shift within the canons of Filipino art. By introducing modern ideas into the Philippine art scene, Edades managed to revolutionize the conventions of Filipino art by broadening the possibilities of artistic practice and aesthetic value beyond the likes of the Classical and Traditional schools of art. His defiance to what the Conservatives structured as “art” was a conscious call for real artistic expression. Thus, his pieces were in stark opposition to the bright, nostalgic, and idyllic scenes that pervaded the hegemonic artistic canon. His pieces often featured roughly constructed figures of laborers burdened by the realities of their work. He attested that “art is ever the expression of man’s emotion, and not a mere photographic likeness of nature.” To express his individual emotion, the artist is privileged to create in that distinctive form that best interprets his own experience. To quote curator Ditas Samson: “What was the first exposure of Filipino artists to modernism? Aside from photographs from Life magazine and conversations with each other, it had to be from the works of Victorio Edades.” Although he was born in Bolosan, Pangasinan, Edades would retire with his family to Davao City in 1962; and would live there, continuing to paint until his death.

Alvina, Augusto MR Gonzalez III, Jaime C. Laya, Lisa Guerrero Nakpil, Marian Pastor Reyes; Januarius Holdings, Inc. 2020. Page 54 with a Full Color Illustration on page 119. This work from 1979 recalls the human contours of 1928’s “The Builders” with hints of the angularity of Cezanne, to whom Victorio Edades looked up to. As a flashback, in 1922, when Edades was working in the United States, the traveling exhibit of the Armory show opened his eyes and that of the American public to the artistic ferment of Europe in the twenties. Edades was also to find inspiration in the modernist idiom of Cezanne, Picasso, and Gauguin. Modernism as a movement in the Philippines opened formally in 1928 at the Columbian Club in Manila with a bang—an exhibition of works by Edades. The most controversial painting in this landmark exhibition was The Builders, a dark and heavily textured work depicting men working in a quarry. His works departed entirely from the classicism of de la Rosa and the pastoral style of Amorsolo. Both as an artist and a writer, he waged a tireless campaign through endless debates carried on in the press with conservative writers and artists for the cause of modern art. Edades not only introduced Modernism in Philippine art. He also gave it its earnest guidance.

It gives the viewer a glimpse of how he defied the academic tradition and instead lobbied for the acceptance of modernist approaches to art-making both in discourses and in his craft. This depiction of the rural seaside is in contrast to the classical approach championed by Fernando Amorsolo. In the fashion of modernist expressionism, Edades also used lighter colors, compared to his earlier paintings with darker, subdued hues. Here, he presented another way of looking at pictorial elements and instead focused on individual vision made universal.
