  • WILLIAM EDMONDSON (American, 1860-1951) Reclining Figur
    Nov. 17, 2014

WILLIAM EDMONDSON (American, 1860-1951) Reclining Figur

    Est: $10,000 - $15,000

WILLIAM EDMONDSON (American, 1860-1951) Reclining Figure, circa 1930-40s Stone 10-1/2 inches (26.7 cm) high PROVENANCE: The artist; Private collection, Tennessee, gift from the above; By descent to the present owner. Utilizing pieces of discarded limestone or architectural remnants, William Edmondson began his artistic career as a tombstone carver. Upon reaching nearly 60 years of age and working up to that point as a laborer and janitor, Edmondson left his job when he received a call from the divine to "carry forth" creating his own art. After selling a few tombstones to neighbors, Edmondson began carving funerary sculptures of animals, angels, preachers, and other related subjects. Just six years later, he was given a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, the first African-American to be honored with such a distinction. Thereafter, Edmondson was included in numerous important exhibitions exploring the work of self-taught artists. This reclining figure is on an integrated base that has been carved from a former funerary monument. In executing the form of his sculpture, Edmondson accommodated the pre-existing slope of the former monument as it ascends to the well-defined and presumably male head. In addition, tops of Roman serifs from the tombstone's original inscription are visible at the right side while the flat backside of the figure also retains the surface of the original monument. While the pose certainly belongs to the Western funerary tradition as far back as the Greeks and Etruscans who reclined to banquet into eternity, Edmondson has taken a Modernist departure by removing all overt references to religion or the afterlife, giving us a more generalized human form which could possibly be considered a coy self-portrait.
