Douglas Edwards Art for Sale at Auction

b. 1954 -

Douglas Edwards was born in Toronto, the third of five children. His mother is a professional opera soprano, and all five sons were instructed in music in some way, and encouraged to develop their own talents.

Having had an interest in the arts his whole life, Doug had early success in high school. While still in high school, Douglas’ art skills were recognized early by one of his teachers, Mr. Pascal, and he was asked to paint the school Christmas card for fundraising efforts. After high school, Douglas enrolled in a commercial art program at George Brown College, but realized quickly that it was not the direction he wished to take. He switched to the Ontario College of Art and studied there for four years.

He graduated from Ontario College of Art in 1979. He spent his last year studying in Florence, Italy, part of the off-campus studies program and took courses at the Acadamia de Belli Arte. He travelled Europe where he visited and was influenced by many of the great art galleries, among them the impressionists in Paris, Turner and Constable in London and Klimpt in Vienna.

Douglas has also travelled across Canada, painting landscapes in Alberta & British Columbia, as well as all over Ontario. His favourite spots include Killarney, Muskoka, and most of the east Georgian Bay shoreline. His landscapes are also influenced by the great Canadian landscape painters such as the Group of Seven, Phillips, Beatty, and Jefferys.

Monumental and ethereal landscapes, dominated by expansive skies are Douglas Edwards’ trademark. While he is equally at ease with cityscapes and figurative work, no one captures the vast expanse of Canada quite like he does.

Douglas paints with a masterly loose style, using complementary colours and colour opposites to explore expressions of light playing on land, trees, and water. He loves the subtle colour variations and expression of freedom they give. Painting in oils allows him the slow drying time and direct painting and mixing on the canvas to create stunning vistas.
