    A Set of Twelve Hand Colored Bird Engravings by George Edwards (English, 1694-1773) from A Natural History of Uncommon Birds. 9 3/4 x 8 inches (sight). This lot is located in Chicago. Property from the Charlecote Antique Store, Kansas City, Missouri NOTE: Charlecote Antiques was an anchor of Kansas City’s historic Crestwood neighborhood across four decades. The shop represented a multi-generational passion for scholarship and collecting with an emphasis on British Furniture and Decorative Arts. Opened in 1980 by Kaye Francis Miller, Charlecote built a reputation for sourcing fine 18th century furniture directly from England with a keen eye on craftsmanship and form. Todd Miller soon followed his mother into the business and further developed Charlecote into a world-class retailer. Todd loved taking trips to Europe to find beautiful and unique items to bring back to the shop. He became a staple of the art fair circuit around the nation and endeared himself to both customers and fellow dealers with his knowledge and willingness to teach others.

Edwards' (within the plate, lower centre) and titled 'The Greenland Buck' (within the plate, lower right), 18.4 x 23.3 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Edwards was a prominent naturalist in the 18th century, and has been described as the 'father of British ornithology', with his publications including 'A Natural History of Uncommon Birds' and 'Gleanings of Natural History', and it is from the latter that the present illustration originates. Edwards' writings were in turn referenced by Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) in his updated 'Systema Naturae' in 1758.
