Lionel Edwards Sold at Auction Prices

Illustrator, Painter

Lionel Edwards, a painter from North Wales, displayed an early aptitude for drawing and a love of the outdoors. Edwards pursued his education at London's Heatherly's School of Art and Frank Calderon's School of Animal Painting in the late 1800s, but frequently left the city to ride horses. Edwards eventually left London permanently for the countryside, where he enjoyed riding and painting.

As an avid outdoorsman and painter, Edwards combined expert knowledge of hunting with the technical prowess of a draughtsman to depict realistic hunting scenes. Creating many of his sketches on the spot, Edwards was a prolific and spontaneous artist. Edwards' paintings perfectly capture the raw physicality of the hunt overlaid on the muted English countryside. Although watercolor was Edwards' preferred medium, he also produced sketches and oil paintings, and Lionel Edwards' prints and originals are popular with equine enthusiasts. CVIII, no. 2814, ‘A Sporting Artist at Work – article and photos by Jack Gilbey’, pages untraced; J N P Watson, Lionel Edwards: Master of the Sporting Scene, 1986, pp. 107-111 This is the preparatory study of the landscape at White Roding for Lionel Edwards' finished composition (see previous lot) of the Essex hunt. In his account originally published in Country Life in 1950, Jack Gilbey described how he watched Edwards paint the present scene in front of White Roding: “On the day I watched him at work I was very glad of my warm overcoat and scarf, as the Rodings in March can be a very cold spot, especially when one is on the wrong side of the hedge and facing an east wind. I observed that the easel which he had set up swayed considerably, and the drawing-board required the usual piece of string with a weight attached to it to keep it steady. All the time that he was getting things ready I noticed he was constantly looking at his subject. From a somewhat untidy paintbox he drew a line across the drawing-board. This important line set the limit of the foreground. A second line fixed the extent and depth of the landscape in the middle distance, and then, starting from the left, he lightly dotted in the salient features, such as the road, trees and cottages…What interested me particularly, apart from the quickness and sureness with which all this was accomplished, was the space that he allotted to the foreground, the middle distance and the sky – the last named it seemed, monopolised considerably more than two-thirds of the drawing-board. As he worked he smoked incessantly…”Let’s have a go now at this Essex sky,” he suddenly exclaimed. And I remember looking at a cold, grey and featureless sky and wondering how he would transpose this on to his drawing-board. But, like the other details, it apparently presented no difficulties…And so the morning wore on; it was now 12.30 p.m., and he had been working for 2 ½ hours. We motored home for lunch and were back on the scene once more at 2.30 p.m. The second session lasted until 4 o’clock…Conditions were slightly better in the afternoon, and for nearly half an hour the sun made a valiant attempt to warm us, at the same time lighting up the distant scene and bringing into sharp relief the windmill, the church – even the tombstones – and the cottage buildings, a situation which the artist was quick to take advantage of…Before we left, he had written in pencil some notes on the top of the picture and signed and dated it in the left-hand corner. The sketch was complete.” (see Literature, Watson, pp. 107-109). Framed 39.5 x 55cm

§ Lionel Edwards, RI (1878-1966) 'The Essex' - with the huntsman and hounds, followed at a distance by the field signed, dated and inscribed 'Lionel Edwards / The Essex 1928' (lower right) gouache on paper 51 x 75cm Provenance: Commissioned directly from the artist by his friend, John 'Jack' Newman Gilbey (1888-1984) of Glan Avon, Harlow, Essex, Thence by descent to his great-nephew Literature: Country Life, 22nd December 1950, vol. CVIII, no. 2814, ‘A Sporting Artist at Work – article and photos by Jack Gilbey’, pages untraced; J N P Watson, Lionel Edwards: Master of the Sporting Scene, 1986, pp. 107-111 The present picture and the subsequent lot were both painted for John ‘Jack’ Newman Gilbey (1888-1984) a friend and patron of Lionel Edwards. He was the son of Newman Gilbey (1862-1942) a nephew of Sir Walter Gilbey, 1st Bt. (1831-1914) the well-known wine merchant, agriculturalist and breeder of shire horses, and Maria Victorina de Ysasi (1865-1937). The Gilbey family of Mark Hall, Latton, near Harlow, had long hunted with the Essex, particularly Jack’s father, Newman, and his younger siblings, Carmen (b. 1894-) and Frank (1896-1973) (see C D Bruce, The Essex Foxhounds, 1895-1926, p. 63). Newman Gilbey was a Justice of the Peace for Essex and had been a generous supporter of the Essex Hounds for thirty years. The landscape view of White Roding in the background of the present picture was specifically chosen by Jack Gilbey, as he describes in an account originally published in Country Life in 1950: “With his usual thoroughness Lionel went out for a day with the hunt in order to take stock of the huntsman, his horse and the pack. In the meantime he had asked me to suggest a typical Essex setting, and I thought I could not do better than choose the distant view of the village of White Roding, with undulating ploughland in foreground and middle distance, which had been familiar to me from boyhood” (see Literature, Watson, p. 107). The present painting was completed in April 1928 in Edwards’ studio at Buckholt, West Tytherley, near Salisbury and upon presenting it to his patron, Edwards smilingly remarked: “I have given you an extremely well-behaved field. Every member of the hunt is depicted on the left of the road and only the huntsman is with his hounds” (ibid, p. 109). Upon seeing the finished picture in Edwards’ studio, Jack Gilbey was pleased with the result as he thought “much more of the landscape was thus made visible!...White Roding, with its cold grey sky, its wide expanse of gently undulating fields of brown plough…gives a faithful reproduction of a typical part of Essex hunting country…” (ibid, pp. 110-111). It is fascinating that Lionel Edwards should have done a preliminary study for this picture with snow on the ground (see subsequent lot) which he clearly chose not to depict in this finished work. We are grateful to Simon Marriage, the Chairman of the Essex Hunt, for his assistance with this catalogue entry. Framed 60 x 84.5cm

§ Lionel Edwards, RI (1878-1966) Three mares - Myrobella, Mombasa and Joyce - at the National Stud, Sandley Stud, Dorset signed and dated 'Lionel Edwards 1953' (lower right) oil on canvas 76 x 127cm Provenance: Commissioned by Peter Burrell, CBE (1905-1999) Director of the National Stud 1937-1971, and by descent to his grandchild, Their sale, London, Sotheby's, 13th December 2018, lot 65, when acquired by the present owner The present painting depicts three brood mares - Myrobella, Mombasa and Joyce - at the National Stud at Sandley, near Gillingham in the Dorset countryside with a view of Blackmore Vale beyond. The Stud was the initiative of a wealthy brewer, Colonel William Hall Walker (1856-1933) later Lord Wavertree, who in 1915 offered to donate his bloodstock to the British Government on condition that it acquired his stud farm in Tully, Ireland. Walker was concerned by the country's dangerous shortage of Thoroughbred stallions to breed Cavalry remounts for the First World War. In 1943, the estate at Tully was transferred to the Irish Government and the National Stud moved to Sandley Stud in Dorset. In 1963, it moved, again, to its present Newmarket site and its then Director Peter Burrell (1905-1999) was charged with its new design. Among the Stud’s early notable successes, it bred Blandford (foaled in 1919), which was three times Champion Sire and sired eleven Classic winners, including four Derby winners. In 1942, under the Directorship of Peter Burrell, the Stud produced four Classic winners including Myrobella’s offspring Big Game, who won the 2000 Guineas. On the left of this painting can be seen Myrobella, foaled in 1930 by Tetratema out of Dolabella. She was leased by the National Stud to Hugh Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale (1857-1944) for her racing career and trained by Fred Darling at his stables at Beckhampton in Wiltshire. In 1932, ridden by Gordon Richards, Myrobella won the National Breeders’ Produce Stakes at Sandown Park, followed by the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster and the Boscawen Stakes and the Prendergast Stakes at Newmarket. The Sporting Life described her as ‘a streak of lightening that has paralysed all her opponents’. The following year Myrobella won the Severals Stakes at Newmarket in April, came third in the 1000 Guineas, won the July Cup at Newmarket, the King George Stakes at Goodwood and the Challenge Stakes at Newmarket in October. Myrobella then retired to the National Stud as a broodmare. Among her successful offspring was Snowberry, which won the Queen Mary Stakes, and Big Game, foaled in 1939, which was the best British colt of his generation, winning the 2000 Guineas and the Champion Stakes.
