          Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Melvin Edwards b. 1937 Transcendence 2007 serigraph on BFK Rives paper 30 x 22 inches (sheet) signed and dated, numbered 9/50 Transcendence relates to a sculpture of the same title, which honors David Kearney McDonogh 1844, Lafayette College’s first African American graduate. McDonogh was born into slavery, became a physician, practicing in New York City area. The sculpture project was proposed by Curlee Raven Holton, professor of art and founding director of the College’s Experimental Printmaking Institute, EPI, with which Edwards has collaborated before. He served as artist-in-residence at EPI in 2004-05, supported by the David L. Temple Sr. and Helen J. Temple Visiting Lecture Series Fund. The sculpture is “abstract and symbolic, massive and upward-reaching, representing struggle and tension and achievement,” Holton said. He has created a print whose sales will support a scholarship in Edwards’ name that will benefit students interested in graphic art. (from an article in The New York Times (2009)

          Nov. 14, 2020

Mel Edwards, b. 1937, Transcendence Blue, Serigraph with silver, 24 x 18 inches

          Est: $1,500 - $2,500

Mel Edwards b. 1937 Transcendence Blue Serigraph with silver 2007 signed, titled, and dated 2/26/2007. Artist Proof. 24 x 18 inches (image), 30 x 22 inches (sheet). Mel Edwards was born and raised in Houston, but was given a football scholarship to play at the University of Southern California. Upon arriving at the school, he abandoned sports and began studying art. Edwards' work was born of conflict: the prevailing modern art movement was toward abstraction and the non-objective while he was a student, but he believed art had been made throughout history for a reason and to tell a story. He also faced pressure as an African American artist to present a narrative of racial status. His welded steel Lynch Fragments consolidated those disparate mindsets. His compositions were balanced and pure, yet presented a narrative that was at once current and historical. Edwards found he could present similarly strong images in two-dimensional printmaking as well. In 2008, Edwards' 16 foot tall stainless steel sculpture, Transcendence, was installed on the campus of Lafayette College in Easton, PA. The project was proposed by Curlee Raven Holton, professor of art and founding director of the Experimental Printmaking Institute (EPI). Holton and Edwards had collaborated previously in 2004-2005, when Edwards served as artist-in-residence at EPI. This print was executed and sold to support a scholarship in Edwards' name for students interested in graphic arts. 24 x 18 inches

          MELVIN EDWARDS (1937 - ) OWWA Maya.

          Est: $8,000 - $12,000

MELVIN EDWARDS (1937 - ) OWWA Maya. Welded steel, 2011. 254x178x102 mm; 10x7x4 inches. Signed and titled in steel, verso. Provenance: the artist; the Organization of Women Writers of Africa (OWWA) (2011); the estate of Dr. Maya Angelou. Melvin Edwards presented this sculpture to Dr. Angelou in 2011 when she was honored at the twentieth anniversary celebration of the Organization of Women Writers of Africa (OWWA). Co-founded in 1991 by Ghanaian writer Ama Ata Aidoo and Edwards' late wife poet Jayne Cortez (who served as its president), OWWA organized some of the first international black women writers conferences. Angelou had been a mentor and friend to the organization, and Edwards made the piece specifically for her. In OWWA Maya, Melvin Edwards incorporates many recurring elements in his practice, including horseshoes, chains, and locks. Although primarily chosen for their formal and aesthetic qualities, these materials unfold multiple layers of symbolic significance as they relate to African and African American history and culture, as well as Edwards' autobiography. His use of chains, for example, speaks to the history of slavery and oppression, while simultaneously representing the links between people and cultures. Edwards explains that as an artist, 'I have to be aware of the double and multiple meanings of things.' Of particular importance in the piece is the long, pointed metal instrument, which the artist relates to both Angelou's and OWWA's incisiveness and impact.
