Dietz Edzard Sold at Auction Prices

Painter

In 1911, at the age of 18, German artist Dietz Edzard began his art training with Max Beckmann. Sadly, his subsequent four years as a soldier left him with post-traumatic stress disorder, for which he was eventually committed to an asylum. One of the best known Dietz Edzard paintings, Petite Fille Triste, was painted during his time in treatment, and it depicts a fragile young woman with a terrified expression in her eyes.

With the end of World War II, and the birth of his two daughters, Edzard abandoned gray shadows and dark, harsh imagery. Dietz Edzard paintings, particularly his still-life and portraiture, took on beige and yellow-colored highlights, and exuded a peaceful appearance. After the artist's portrait of American journalist Red Knickerbocker in 1927, there was increased interest in Dietz Edzard paintings for sale. Exhibited:Monza Biennale, German Section, 1925, room 128. The 1925 Biennale aimed to encourage the development of Italian craftmanship. The exhibition program favoured heterogeneity in themes and sections from sacred to graphic arts, and from construction to public art. The German pavilion by the Deutscher Werkbund particularly stood out in 1925.The current work reflects the early influence of the German Expressionists on Edzard's work in the angular human bodies and use of Christian iconography. Before the First World War Edzard studied in Berlin under Max Beckmann, and he was surround by the exciting avant-garde notions of Die Brucke. Following the traumatic war years having been in active military duty for the whole war his work took on a melancholic and reflective tone in the years immediately following the conflict, and it is reflective in his design for this unique stained glass work. The design for the stained glass window gives the impression that it is a particularly personal work, and it has been suggested that it includes a self-portrait of the artist, and that the figure on the right hand side of the image is a portrait of his tutor and artist Max Beckmann.

    Dietz Edzard 1893 Bremen – 1963 Paris Öl auf Leinwand. Signiert u.re. "D. Edzard". Rückseitig die gestempelte Bezeichnung "C". Im gold-, weiß- und beige gefassten Schmuckrahmen. Dietz Edzard 1893 Bremen – 1963 Paris Ab 1911 Studium bei Max Beckmann in Berlin, anschließend Arbeit in seiner Heimatstadt Bremen. 1918 Umzug in die Niederlande, wo er sich bis 1920 aufhielt. 1927 Übersiedlung nach Frankreich, erst in die Provence, dann nach Paris. 1938 Heirat mit der Malerin Suzanne Eisendieck. Das Paar hatte zwei Töchter, Angelica und Christine Edzard. Als Kind und junge Frau stand Christine ihren Eltern mehrfach Modell, zahlreiche Porträts von ihr bleiben erhalten.

Edzard, a colorful artist who has carried on the traditions of the masters of French Impressionism, studied painting with Max Beckmann. In 1929, Edzard's work was included in an exhibition of contemporary painting at the Jeu de Paume, Paris, a museum dedicated to the Impressionist masters. In 1938, Edzard married Suzanne Eisendieck (1908-1998), a well-regarded artist in her own right who worked in an impressionist style.In his book D. Edzard, Gerd Muehsam writes: "Edzard has captured in his canvases the charm of the Parisian atmosphere. With the light, vibrant touch of his brush, he produced sparkling, and yet delicate, paintings of beautiful women, dancers and flowers. His brilliant delineations of circus life and the theatre, his spirited portrayals of Parisian cafe scenes have made him a favorite of art circles in this country and abroad.""Consciously, (Edzard) turns his back on the experimental art of his contemporaries, opposes all weighting of art with programs and theorems. Deliberately, he avoids the representation of human conflict and inner discords and the chaos and shifting quicksands of modern existence. Instead, he prefers to work along well-defined modes of expression. The line begun in portraits of Velazquez and Goya and continued in the art of Manet and Renoir becomes Edzard's artistic credo."
