  • WILLIAM EGGLESTON (1939- ) Untitled (In Case of Emergency). 1974.
    Feb. 13, 2025

WILLIAM EGGLESTON (1939- ) Untitled (In Case of Emergency). 1974.

    Est: $10,000 - $15,000

WILLIAM EGGLESTON (1939- ) Untitled (In Case of Emergency). 1974. Dye transfer print, the image measuring 13¼x19⅜ inches (33.6x49.2 cm.), the sheet 16x20 inches (40.6x50.8 cm.), with Eggleston's signature in pencil and the 14 Pictures portfolio stamp with the plate number "13" and edition notation "15" (of 15) in pencil on verso. This image features saturated yellows and reds, colors Eggleston favored in the early 1970s, off set beautifully with blue and other neutral tones. The portfolio 14 Pictures was privately published, and was the first venture of this kind Eggleston made. The strong raking angle is mysterious and evocative, showcasing his mastery of both form and color. Eggleston had only just discovered the dye transfer print process in 1973, deployed here to stunning effect.

The Offset Lithograph is from an unknown edition size. and is not framed. The condition was rated A: Mint. They focus on the mundane world. But no subject is fuller of implications than the mundane world!" Mark Holborn, in his introduction to Ancient and Modern writes about the dark undercurrent of these mundane scenes as viewed through Eggleston's lens: "[Eggleston's] subjects are, on the surface, the ordinary inhabitants and environs of suburban Memphis and Mississippi—friends, family, barbecues, back yards, a tricycle and the clutter of the mundane. The normality of these subjects is deceptive, for behind the images there is a sense of lurking danger." American artist Edward Ruscha said of Eggleston's work, "When you see a picture he’s taken, you’re stepping into some kind of jagged world that seems like Eggleston World.” Paper creasing in the left side of the print.
