Jan Adriaan van Eijk (1808 - 1887). "Huis met de Hoofden te Amsterdam, naar de natuur"

      Est: €70 - €140

Jan Adriaan van Eijk (1808-1887). "Huis met de Hoofden te Amsterdam, naar de natuur" Albumin (?) photo, before November 1865, 15.2 x 11.2 cm., affixed to cardboard holder with stamped signature below the photo and title in pen on reverse, loose in half cloth portfolio with gilt lettered label "Photographisch Album door Mr. J.A. Van Eijk" on front cover, 32.5 x 25 cm. With loose in the same file: (International group portrait of 13 men, incl. J.A. van Eijk). Albumin photo, before 1877, 11.3 x 14.2 cm. (rounded top corner), affixed to cardboard holder with signature and the names of the men depicted. Ad 1: An obvious subject for this photographer: in May 1854 he moved with his family to Keizersgracht RR 168 (modern number 128), opposite the Huis met de Hoofden. He made prints in various techniques, a daguerreotype, a calotype (1855!), a salt print (1856) and another 2 variants (1860). At the exhibition "De eerste foto's van Amsterdam 1845-1875" at the City Archives, 2010, Room 1 (Amateur photographers and their city) an entire wall was set up with photos by Van Eijk. Ad 2: Lovely group portrait, taken before 1877 because James Scott Bowerbank (naturalist), one of the men in the image, died that year. We were unable to find a context or occasion for this portrait, but considering the many international activities of Van Eijk (seen as the second person bottom right) there were many occasion for such a portrait. See for extensive information on the versatile and extremely successful J.A. Van Eijk: http://journal.depthoffield.eu/vol28/nr43/f05nl/en.
