Jan Ekiert, Polish/French 1907-1993- Sunrise over townscape; oil on board, signed 'Ekiert' lower left, 31.5 x 53.5 cm (ARR) Provenance: Family of the artist. Note: Jan (Jean) Ekiert was born in the village of Kombornia in the south eastern region of Poland in 1907. Showing early promise as an artist he enrolled at the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts. At the outbreak of the second world war he enlisted in the army, was captured, and then spent the rest of the war in a German Prisoner of war camp. After the war he settled in Paris, where he met and married fellow artist, Lily (Eleanora) Reinhold Ekiert. They would spend many summers in the Provence and would take several holiday trips to North Africa, which would provide the subject matter of many of their paintings. The Parisian gallery, Galerie Benezit, twice mounted one man exhibitions of his work. Over several years his work was regularly shown at the annual Salon d’Autumne. Jan Ekiert, Landscape Oil on wooden panel, 22 x 25 cm (framed 41,5 x 49 cm). Jan Ekiert (Kombornia, Poland 1909 - Paris 1993). Polish painter. In 1939, he was imprisoned in a camp in Germany. After the war, he settled in Paris where he studied, among others, at the Fine Arts School and at the Grande Chaumière Academy. He was close to the post-war Polish emigration in Paris, including the Kultura circle. In 1961, he won the artistic prize of Kultura. His works were often exhibited in Parisian galleries and are currently in French and Polish public and private collections (among others, of the Lodz Museum of Art, the National Museum of Przemysl, the National Museum of Cracow….).
