*** Private collection Beirut Acquired from Mr. Riad Dweik, Aref El-Rayess's neighbor, probably offered by the artist on his return from Arabia to Mr. Riad Dweik between 1990 and 1991. English The artwork featured in this catalog, which Millon takes great pleasure in presenting, was created during the early years of the artist's residence in Saudi Arabia, spanning from 1981 to 1988. It draws its inspiration from the vast deserts of Saudi Arabia and represents a collection of rare works produced by the artist during this specific period. Aref El Rayess, born in Aley, Lebanon, in 1928, embarked on his artistic journey at the tender age of eleven. His creative talents began to shine, and in 1948, his first exhibition took place in Beirut with the generous support of individuals such as journalist Arlette Levy, artist Georges Cyr, art critic Victor Hakim, and Henry Seyrig, Head of the French Institute of Archaeology. From 1948 to 1957, El Rayess led a nomadic artistic life, traveling between Senegal and Paris. During this period, he honed his skills at the Academy of Fine Arts and various free studios, learning from prominent figures such as Fernand Leger, Andre Lhôte, and La Grande Chaumière. In 1957, he returned to Lebanon, establishing his own studio and an atelier dedicated to Aubusson tapestries in collaboration with Canadian artist Roger Caron. Following an exhibition at the Italian Cultural Centre in 1959, he was awarded a scholarship to study in Italy. Over the next four years, he split his time between Florence and Rome, further enriching his artistic repertoire. In 1963, the Lebanese government commissioned El Rayess to create two sculptures representing Lebanon at the New York World Fair. This endeavor led him to spend two years in the United States, where he engaged with Expressionist painters and intellectuals, broadening his artistic horizons. Aref El Rayess possessed a unique intellectual curiosity, driven by a deep sense of personal involvement with the world. His approach was less about naiveté and more about his connection to the universe, a manifestation of his mysticism, and a commitment to embodying the absolute reality of ideas. This profound sense of involvement extended to his reverence for the ideas of others, as he recognized their intrinsic value. It was less a misplaced curiosity and more a natural and civilized interaction with others. For Rayess, every question concerning the world was, by necessity, also his own, rooted in a religious and moral imperative. His religion revolved around the unification of human vision and the universe. Rayess provides a striking example of a flexible mind, where mysticism is built upon the experience of a vision. During his time, few understood that his quest was simply to capture this vision through his art.
