Der in Morges in der Schweiz geborene Benjamin Vautier liess sich 1857 in Düsseldorf nieder und heiratete 1858 Bertha Louise Euler, die Tochter Joseph Eulers (1804-1886), einem bedeutenden Düsseldorfer Politiker und Notar. Dieses kurz vor der Hochzeit des Malers entstandene Doppelporträt stellt die zukünftige Ehegattin des Künstlers, Bertha Louise mit ihrer Schwester Emma Josefa Sophie in einem Park bei Düsseldorf dar. Der Ring an der rechten Hand der Porträtierten deutet auf ihre Verlobung mit dem Künstler hin.

Öl auf Leinwand. Rechts am Rand signiert und datiert: B. Vautier 1888. 36,5 x 28,5 cm. Ausstellung: Berliner Kunst-Ausstellung, 1909, Nr. 267 (verso Etikette). Diese hier angebotene Selbstdarstellung des Künstlers von 1888 entspricht der Version, die Benjamin Vautier im selben Jahr auf Anfrage der Uffizien in Florenz für die bedeutende Collezione degli autoritratti della Galleria degli Uffizi anfertigte. Aufgrund seines Erfolges als Professor an der Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie sollte er sich in die Folge der einflussreichen Maler der Kunstgeschichte u.a. neben Tizian, Rubens und Raffael einreihen (siehe Longchamps, Jacques: Marc Louis Benjamin Vautier (dit l'Ancien).
