FRUCHTGIRLANDE UM NISCHE MIT RÖMER UND ZITRONE Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 68 x 77,5 cm. In vegetabil geschnitztem und vergoldeten Rahmen. Die Zuschreibung erfolgte 1998 durch Fred Meijer, das Gemälde ist beim RKD in Den Haag unter Nr. 64338 registriert. Nach einem kurzen Aufenthalt in Frankfurt und Kopenhagen, wo er am Hofe von Frederick III arbeitete, heiratete er 1660 in Amsterdam, zog 1665 nach Hamburg und 1669 schließlich nach Berlin, wo er Hofmaler bei Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg wurde. Viele seiner Blumen- und Fruchtgirlanden lassen den Einfluss von Daniel Seghers spüren. Statt einer aus gemeißeltem Stein gebildeten Kartusche erdachte sich Elliger in unserem Bild jedoch eine rechteckige Holznische, welche das Fensterbrett eines einfachen Hauses illusionistisch dargestellt. Otmar Elliger's Illustrations of Calvinist doctrine

Designs for a Title Page and Four Designs for Illustrations of Biblical Subjects. Abraham Bloemaert (1566-1651) & Otmar Elliger I (1633-1679). Pen and brown ink and various shades of brown and grey wash heightened with white over black chalk. title page size 8 1/2 x 6 1/4 inches, illustration size each approx. 5 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches, 22 1/4 x 36 inches total framed size. This fascinating series of watercolors by Otmar Elliger I was completed for an illustrated edition of the Bible, as indicated by the title which reads: Cabinet Der Uytmuntende Teekeningen Behelsende de Heylige Schrift Uytvoerig met Oostindischen Ink Gewassen Door Othomar de Elliger. The titlepage is in fact signed by Abraham Bloemaert, the famed Dutch artist of much earlier birth. Elliger?s scenes personify important tenets of Calvinist thought, theological beliefs of great importance to his patron, the Great Elector Frederick William of Brandenburg.

Oil on wood. 66,5 x 46,5cm. Framed. Provenance: Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia. Fred G. Meijer, RKD The Hague, writes concerning the present work on January 16, 2014 via email: "This festoon is a characteristic work of Ottomar Elliger the Elder (1633-1679) (not the Younger), probably from around 1670." He refers to a directly comparable work, which can be found in the online database of the RKD under the number 56228.
