The letter reads: " July 6, 1936 My dear Mr. del Piatta: I am most sympathetic with / your efforts and I had hoped that / some way could be found to complete / the memorial. However, everyone, even / the President, has considered the / project and it seems that the only / hope is an act of Congress. / I wish I could have been more helpful. Very sincerely yours, / Eleanor Roosevelt. " Framed with a photograph of the former First Lady. This letter is very likely written to Ernesto Begni del Piatta, the sculptor of the Navy-Merchant Marine Memorial erected in Lady Bird Johnson Park on Columbia Island in 1934. His statue honors sailors of the United States Navy and the United States Merchant Marine who died at sea during World War I. del Piatta likely had written to Mrs. Roosevelt asking for her help to upgrade the plinth and surrounding grounds of the Memorial, which was finally completed in 1941, after del Piatta's death.
