    Jean Pierre Henri Elouis (1755-1840) miniature portrait of dr. john conrad otto (1774-1844) Signed and dated "J.P. Elouis 1798," watercolor on ivory, locket case, engraved on verso, " Dr. John Conrad Otto 1774-1844 Princeton A.B. 1792 University of Penn. M.D. 1796. Philadelphia Family Physician of the old school. Residence 139 Arch Street. Portrait made after recovery from yellow fever." 2 3/4 x 2 1/4 in. PROVENANCE: The son of Dr. Bodo Otto, Senior Surgeon of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, Dr John Otto was the first modern physician to write about hemophilia. In 1803, published "An Account of an Hemorrhagic Disposition in Certain Families." He succeeded Dr. Benjamin Rush as physician and clinical lecturer of the Pennsylvania Hospital and held the position for 21 years. Dr. Otto was well known throughout the United States and revered in Philadelphia. He served as physician to the Philadelphia Orphan Asylum and worked to establish sanitary measures and hospitals throughout the city during epidemics. Otto married Elizabeth Tod, daughter of Philadelphia merchant, Alexander Tod (see Lot 774) in December of 1802. Descended in the family to the present owner.
