      FRANK EDWIN ELWELL (American, 1858-1922) The Young Cleopatra, 1896 Marble relief 21-3/4 x 13-1/2 inches (55.2 x 34.3 cm) Inscribed along lower edge: The Young Cleopatra / F. Edwin Elwell / Paris 1896 F. Edwin Elwell was the adopted son of novelist Louisa May Alcott, with whom he first studied sculpture. He subsequently trained with Daniel Chester French in Concord, Massachusetts as well as with Alexandre Falguière at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris. He exhibited widely, received gold medals for his work at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition and the 1891 Pan-American Exposition. He earned considerable celebrity for his bronze sculpture, Dickens and Little Nell, which depicts the 19th-century British author and his character from the 1840-41 novel, The Old Curiosity Shop. Today the sculpture stands in Clark Park in Philadelphia.
