      Portraits of husband and wife. 1850s. 2 hand-colored salted paper prints in ornately carved wooden frames (slightly scratched). Each ca. 19 x 15,5 cm (37 x 31 cm). Photographer's studio stamp embossed on mount below image, one with photographer's label attached to frame verso, both annotated in blue ink on frame verso. Hermann Seligmann Emden was a German copper engraver, lithographer, and photographer recognized for his contributions to early photography and credited with creating one of Germany’s first photographically illustrated books.       "Der Dom zu Mainz". 1857. Salt print. 23 x 16 cm. Mounted to board (soiled, paper loss in upper corners), printed title below the image on the mount. - - At the start of his career Hermann Emden made engravings, drawings and lithographs. After being denied permission to establish his own business, he worked in a photography studio with Hermann Henning and as of 1852 had one of the first photo studios in Frankfurt am Main. He kept his main studio in Frankfurt and travelled to nearby cities, taking portraits and photos of events. His studio remained active until 1872. – A few light foxing spots in upper right, otherwise a strong tonal print in very good condition. - - Lit.: Ulrich Pohlmann/Dietmar Siegert (eds.).       "Der Dom zu Mainz und seine bedeutendsten Denkmäler in 36 Original-Photographien". 35 x 27,5 cm. 23 p. and 36 salt prints on plates, various sizes between circa 15 x 12 cm, 20 x 20 cm, 23 x 16 cm and 18 x 8 cm. Bound in half-leather album with embossed covers. Mainz, Verlag von Victor v. Zabern, 1858. At the start of his career Hermann Emden made engravings, drawings and lithographs. However, after he was denied permission to have his own business, he worked in a photography studio with Hermann Henning and as of 1852 had one of the first photo studios in Frankfurt am Main. He kept his main studio in Frankfurt and travelled to nearby cities, taking portraits and photos of events. His studio remained active until 1872. - Foxing throughout on pages, first image slightly effected, a few prints with minmal fading, two with browning in sky area, otherwise many strong prints with a dark violet-brown tone and in very good condition.
