Lin Emery (American/Louisiana, 1926-2021), "St. Gertrude", painted plaster, unsigned, h. 21 in., w. 5 in., d. 3 in., mounted on wood board, overall h. 30 1/2 in., w. 13 in., d. 3 3/4 in. Note: “I have a very deep belief not in any practiced religion but in the search for unity and spiritual understanding.” – Lin Emery In 1951, Lin Emery returned to New Orleans, where she had briefly lived in 1945, and worked as a studio assistant with Enrique Alferez. She undertook numerous commissions in plaster, clay and bronze of life-size religious figures for churches in the city and throughout the region. One such example of St. Gertrude the Great in Des Allemands, Louisiana from 1956 measures twelve feet by eight feet. The figures are classical in inspiration with modern lines and a fluidity of form that would come to define the artist. The study offered here of St. Gertrude is for an installation at St. James Major Church on Gentilly Boulevard in New Orleans. Emery completed six sculpted figures of saints mounted above the altar in the sanctuary that are still in place today. In the evolving art world of the 1950s, Emery’s interests turned away from her figurative and religious work as she moved into abstraction and favored metal as a medium. She remained active in New Orleans the rest of her life and was an engaged member of the city’s contemporary art scene, serving as one of the founders of the Orleans Gallery in 1956 and as a co-founder of the Contemporary Arts Center of New Orleans. This rare early study is an exciting window into development of the renowned sculptor and as she herself said of her earlier sculptures: “I was looking for an essence, an interior and searching for understanding.” Ref.: Kemp, John R. Note: In the lot offered here, the sleek blade-like aluminum elements of Lin Emery’s “Cadence” sail through the air with nimble precision. Originally a study for the monumental work of the same name installed in Lisle, Illinois, this work maintains the elegant gravitas of its larger counterpart. Many of her wind driven kinetic works draw inspiration from natural forms, however in the case of “Cadence”, “[t]he reference is less to leaves or stalks than to the wind itself.” Ref.: Palmedo, Philip F. Lin Emery (American/Louisiana, b. 1928) "Tree Dance" polished and painted aluminum kinetic sculpture small-scale variant of the twenty-one-foot monumental sculpture on the grounds of Hofstra University, Hempstead, New York, presented on a marble-clad square base. h. 57", overall h. 75", orbit dia. 42" Provenance: Arthur Roger Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana; Private collection. Notes: "Sculpture is living, it's vital, it's changeable. Even when you walk around it, it can be something different. Drawing is a reflection and coordinating eye and hand, but sculpture is your mind and an idea." --Lin Emery An internationally renowned artist, Lin Emery's kinetic sculptures have an elegance of movement which masks an intricate and precise working. The components slowly sway and undulate, pushing and pulling each other in a seemingly endless dance, incorporating the very air around them. Using highly polished aluminum, a material she says is readily available in the port city of New Orleans, Emery creates abstracted forms reminiscent of the natural elements which inspired them. As the artist once admitted, "I love the natural movement of the trees on the levees, the river, and anything in nature." Emery spent her youth traveling between New York and Florida, before enrolling in Columbia University at the precocious age of 16. She traveled from university to university before arriving at the Sorbonne in Paris. While in Paris, she became interested in the work of Russian sculptor Ossip Zadkine (1890-1967) whose studio was near her lodgings. Zadkine accepted her as a student, intrigued by the artistic potential of the curious and creative young woman. Emery eventually returned to New York to study welding at the New York Sculpture Center, one of the few schools to accept women into such a program. Upon completion of her studies, she settled in New Orleans where she turned a portion of her French Quarter apartment into a studio. While her first sculptures were figural, Emery soon found herself more intrigued by the internal structural armatures than the finished work. She began to experiment with abstract welded sculptures, eventually incorporating natural elements - water, magnets, air - into her works to create motion. "Tree Dance" exemplifies Emery's kinetic sculpture. This lot, a variant of the 1990 commission for Hofstra University (made possible by the generous gift of Florence and Robert Kauffman,) is wind activated. With its geometric-shaped red and chrome graduated leaves and winding trunk, it scintillates at the slightest breeze, creating a veritable kaleidoscope of colors and forms. Emery is the recipient of numerous prestigious national and international awards, most significantly the Laszlo Aranyi Award of Honor for Public Art, a National Endowment for the Arts Grant, a Louisiana Women of Achievement Award, the Osawa, Japan Grand Prix for Public Sculpture, and an Opus Award from the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. She has exhibited widely including: the National Academy of Design, New York, New York; the Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans, Louisiana; Arthur Roger Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana; Kouros Gallery, New York, New York; and the Academy of Fine Art, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Provenance: Arthur Roger Gallery, New Orleans, 1992; Koch Collection, Metairie, LA. Note: The narrative of Lin Emery’s work from the static to the animated is a compelling one. In 1949, a sojourn in Paris would mark the inauguration of Lin Emery, the sculptor. Inspired by her mentor, Ossip Zadkine and the Romanesque works in the Musée de l’homme, Emery would incorporate the aesthetics and ideologies of both into her early religious works. Back in her adopted home of New Orleans as a studio assistant to Enrique Alferez, she was approached by the Father Judge Mission Seminary to create a series of sculptures for their church in Virginia. The resulting works are elongated and elegant figures representing familiar religious characters. In 1952, Emery would attend the Sculpture Center in New York and learn how to weld and cast metal. There her main influence would be Seymour Lipton and his textured welded forms. With metal being her newfound medium of choice, Emery focused her efforts on making it move. Inspired by the small fortuitous incident of witnessing a drop of water hit a spoon and make it rock in her kitchen sink, Emery focused her efforts and engineering ingenuity into building moving water forms she dubbed “aquamobiles.” This would be her first foray into kinetic sculpture. In 1965, Emery began experimenting with magnets, which she would hide in both the individual elements of her works and in the hidden motorized base, the rotation of which would cause sporadic, undulating movements. While the “aquamobiles” and “magnetmobiles” were effective in their capacity to convey a certain vitality, they would prove too constraining in their reliance on electricity and pumps. It was her 1977 discovery and subsequent usage of ball bearings in her works that would transform the way her sculptures move, giving them a freedom and autonomy that was unattainable previously. With this new lightness in articulation, she took to the wind, which would prove her most reliable source of movement. In the lots offered here, an early “magnetmobile” dances hauntingly on a stand, and both a small and large-scale petal form sculpture spin and whirl in an unpredictable, yet elegant frenzy.
