            Mar. 05, 2024

Emily Kame Kngwarreye - Alalgura Country, 1993

            Est: $70,000 - $90,000

In this highly dramatic work, the application of pink, yellow, and grey colours highlight the varied and changing hues in the lifecycle of the Anooralya Yam and the seasonal change that comes when storms build and bring rain to the the dry desert landscape near Alalgura on Utopia Station, west of Delmore Downs. The thick textured fusion of deep yellow and pink hues gives a concentrated view of the desert's food sources after rain. Often hidden from view, these seed, fruit, and root vegetables are enormously bountiful. The requirement to understand the life cycles of all bush foods is necessary to the survival of Alyawerre and Anmatjerre people. This work evokes the build up of an approaching storm. The rain falls and water slowly flows along the broad shallow watercourse and replenishes the soakage at Alalgura. The flourish of growth that follows is exceptional and rapid. The dramatic transformation of the desert from bare to abundant is a display of the desert's power. Linked into this is women's ceremonial life called 'awelye' that is based on the belief that they help nurture the desert food sources by ensuring future fertile generations.

            Est: $30,000 - $40,000

In this work, thepink, blue and yellow colours highlight the varied and changing hues in the life cycle of the Yam and other food plants found near Alalgura on Utopia Station, west of Delmore Downs. The flowers of summer draw emus to feed on her country and raise their young. From an aerial perspective we see sporadic clustered growth after summer rain. The rain falls and water slowly flows along the broad shallow watercourse and replenishes the soakage at Alalgura. The flourish of growth that follows is exceptional and rapid. Ceremony reinforces, through narrative, the significance of this knowledge, by teaching survival skills and knowledge, basic social codes and obligations.

She depicts an aerial view of Utopia, her homeland. Emily says she sees these vivid colors at certain times of the year only when she is in a deep sleep. Which could possibly be astral travelling. Her paintings of these types are basically DREAMING MAPS of her area. Emily paints with all types of bush tucker in mind, i.e.: kangaroos, lizards, snakes, witchetty grubs, bush plums, yams, etc."

This is an exploratory work created in those early vigorous days of painting with acrylic paint - extending and giving life to her creative path as an active artist. “Alhalkere Country 1990” aligns with her batik background when working with the fluid hot wax and coloured dyes allowed the emergence of her individual and distinctive loose-handed abstract style. The colour and workings of the dots in this work show that Emily was working with two brushes, where the smaller one was obviously passed its used-by date with its wooden head impacting on the canvas leaving a hollowed-out centre. The murky red ochre dots on charcoal background, the watery creamy white dots, and the light green suggest that plants and their fruit and seed were dried and sparse – in a state of country courting drought. This canvas appeared in September, three months before summer rains could be expected, and at a time of being alert to sense and see indicators of likely rain. With rain, the ceremonies would gather people together in hope of “singing up” a good season – a time to “look after” their country. Significant early works by Emily Kame Kngwarreye have been acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria and collected by other notable institutions and major collectors across the world.’ © Emily K Kngwarreye/Copyright Agency 2022

EKK-5-96 PROVENANCE Commissioned by the Chalmers Family on MacDonald Downs Station, bordering Delmore Downs Station, in 1996 Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi, Melbourne Private collection, United States of America Sotheby's, Melbourne, 24 July 2007, lot 172 Private collection, Melbourne Deutscher and Hackett, Melbourne, 26 March 2014, lot 84 Private collection, Victoria ESSAY Renowned for the expression of ceremony through her art, Emily Kame Kngwarreye painted the spiritual aspect of her life as it relates to country and Awelye or women's ceremonies. Her mark making and abstract references to ceremonial practice identifies the relationship between individual, country, ceremony and ancestors. Ceremony, as expressed through narrative dance and body decoration, reinforces knowledge about such staples as bush foods and water sources, as well as teaching basic social codes and obligations. Through such paintings, Emily passes on her knowledge to those who follow her. In the 1990s, Emily Kngwarreye emerged as one of Australia's leading painters and her works became sought-after on an unprecedented scale. Kngwarreye's mark making revealed a strength and sureness of hand that delivered an exuberance of gesture. Her paintings were constructed of various elements that over time were either added to, or eliminated from the surface of the canvas. Underlying grids structure the compositions, with sequences of dots aligned between or over dots, dashes and linear marks, meandering lines and areas of dots applied on dots allowing a build-up of colour. These elements constitute the artist's lexicon and are used separately or in varying combinations, thus allowing her work to evolve and be constantly fresh. Bush (Emily’s) Dreaming, 1996 is a vibrant painting that belongs to a group of works produced between 1995 and 1996. This phase of her production was characterised by tangled massing of lines sometimes scrawled across the canvas. Scribbled in character, these rapid, multicoloured marks evoke the spiky angularity of desert grasses and contrast with the solid meandering lines of the preceding yam paintings. Sometimes translucent in nature and at other times thick and textural, their immediacy shows a speed and energy in brushwork. Emily's career began in the late 1980s, and in the years until her death in 1996, she produced a body of work which radically altered the way in which we see and understand modern Aboriginal art. For most of her life she lived with little contact to the outside world. While much has been made of the way in which we might view her work in parallel with modern, non-indigenous abstraction, we must first recognise her achievement as a truly inventive and original contribution to Aboriginal art. Mar. 08, 2022

Emily Kame Kngwarreye - Arlatyey Pencil Yam Dreaming, 1996

            Est: $40,000 - $60,000

Emily Kame Kngwarreye was born at Anilitye (Boundary Bore), and began painting on canvas in her late 70s. The subject of this work is Arlatyey, the Pencil Yam or Bush Potato. This is a valuable food source and the subject of important songs, dances, and ceremonies amongst Eastern Anmatyerre people. In this painting, Emily has characterised the roots of the yam during the plant’s full period of maturity. As the foliage dies off, cracks appear in the ground which trace the root system and indicate that the engorged tubers are ready to be dug up and eaten. Solid lines, stark and unadorned, trace the meandering paths of the pencil yam roots as they forge their way through the desert sands. Arguably the most important of these works is the monumental Big Yam Dreaming, 1995, which is 8 x 3 m, in the National Gallery of Victoria. Painted entirely in white on a black ground, it has been described as the ‘perfect bridge between Aboriginal art and contemporary international art’. Emily Kngwarreye was awarded the Australian Creative Fellowship in 1992 and continued painting prolifically until her death in 1996.

Emily Kame Kngwarrye (Australian, 1910-1996) "Yam Dreaming", acrylic on canvas, 35-3/4" x 47-1/2", very good condition. Emily Kame Kngwarreye was one of Australia's most prominent Aboriginal artists. Her first foray into art was with the Women's Batik Group of the Utopia Region around 1977. Cooee Art Indigenous Fine Art Auction "The use of colour in this painting, reflects the hot outback summers, where little rain has fallen. The painting indicates the growth pattern of the Anooralya finger yam at its peak, ready to fall into decline and brought to maturity by the intense and unforgiving summer sun. In Emily's layered approach, we also see the sporadic clustering of plants in later stages of maturity. Understanding the life cycle of these plants is vital to survival in the bush. This is affirmed within the narrative of the song cycle sung during the ceremony, which reinforces the significance of this knowledge and teaches social codes and obligations to the next generation. Emily Kame Kngwarreye is widely regarded as Australia's most important and successful Aboriginal artist. Her remarkable career lasted just seven years prior to her death at 86 years of age in 1996. The painterly quality and originality of her works extended her influence beyond the reach of Aboriginal art and attracted an international audience ready to acclaim her new and innovative contemporary style." Other colours reflect the time of the season when particular bush flowers flourish. These flowers contain seeds that are collected to make types of seed cake, damper, medicines and love potions. Other colours symbolises the ‘ndorkwa’, or bush plum, when unripe. The dots being placed in lineal fashion and placed amongst lines, connects with the practise of anointing the body with lineal designs during ceremony, thus adding another dimension of celebration in the execution of this painting. Ceremony reinforces through narrative, the significance of this knowledge. As well, it teaches basic social codes and obligations through her paintings, she serves to reinforce her knowledge amongst those who are to carry on after her.’

ESSAY: Undoubtedly one of Australia’s greatest painters of the twentieth century, Emily Kame Kngwarreye’s success came after a lifetime making art – initially in her role of ceremonial leader, painting the bodies of fellow Anmatjerre women for ceremony; subsequently as a prominent member of the Utopia Women’s batik movement and in the later years of her life, sustaining the unprecedented demand for her paintings following the successes of her early exhibitions. Often a response to the everchanging landscape of her traditional homelands at Alhalker (Alalgura) close to Utopia, north east of Alice Springs, the paintings of country by Emily Kngwarreye record her acute observation, often in minute detail, of the shifting fluctuations in the state of the flora around her, alerting her to the readiness of bush food or medicinal plants. Painted in 1991, A Desert Life Cycle III celebrates the post-summer dryness, where a muted carpet of scattered seeds and grasses dot the landscape yet despite the dryness, underground tuber vegetables and certain berries are ripe for picking. Judith Ryan notes that, ‘clearly Emily Kngwarreye was a mark-maker extraordinaire…. she ventured further with masses of dots and marks, making intimate and grand gestures layering and intensifying the dots to the exclusion of graphic elements’1 and here the layers of white, olive, yellow, purple, and grey dots, in many places applied by the artist using her fingers, faithfully evoke the colours of her country. The black ground may be seen as the spread of the roots of Emily Kame Kngwarrere’s totemic yam plant underground, and the spread of ancestral forces through the earth. The accompanying certificate notes that; ‘To look on Emily's work from an aerial perspective is necessary to understanding her view of her country. In a layered approach with colour, we see the sporadic clustered growth of plants in different stages of maturity. Knowledge about the life cycles of plants is learned in everyday situations and reinforced in ceremony. Ceremony asserts that the combined spiritual power of women assures fertility and future seasons for all desert life forms’.2 Although following in the wake of the success of Western Desert painting, Emily Kngwarreye became nationally and internationally recognised for the way in which her painting intuitively responded to her specific cultural experience. The many stylistic shifts she effortlessly adopted allowed her work to evolve, yet be constantly fresh. 1. This country was Kngwarrreye’s raison d’être, and the intimate physical and spiritual knowledge held within the ceremonial cycles, translating the land and dictating peoples’ relation to it, informed each and every one of her many artworks. Desert Winter, 1994, is major high-colourist work, expansive in scale, celebrating the cyclical phases that govern the natural world and the potent life-giving and spiritual forces stored within it. Resonant in a restricted palette of warm reds, yellows and oranges, the organic dancing trails of Kngwarreye’s hand reflect with surprising immediacy an ancient continuity of knowledge and interaction with the land. As Judith Ryan notes, the potency of Kngwarreye’s paint in her later work obviated the need for a written explanation – the raw power of her colour and gesture can be appreciated across cultures and creeds.1 In the 1990s, Emily Kngwarreye, already in her eighth decade, publicly emerged as one of the world’s leading contemporary painters. Reflecting the total connectedness to the land to which she belongs, each painting became a metaphorical self-portrait and declaration of her people’s profound sovereignty over the land. Tackling massive canvases with confidence and verve beyond her years, Kngwarreye produced many masterpieces in her twilight years between 1992 and 1996.Her advancing years endowed her an increased motivation and impetus to visually express her country’s tjukurrpa, displaying extraordinary dynamism and nimble inventiveness in her varied mark making. Alhalkere, while extraordinarily remote, arid and hostile to life, is home to native yams, grasses as well as emus, dingos and lizards. The ceremonial cycles of many of these separate elements fell under Kngwarreye’s own purview as an elder within her community. Consequently, these multifarious dreamings coexist within her artworks – hidden amongst the densely packed dots and vigorous rhythmic parallel lines. 1994 was a year characterised by below-average rainfall and shortage of water across the country felt particularly keenly in the Simpson Desert and Central Australia. Characterised as a broad, flat area of desert covered by windswept sand hills and little vegetation, Alhalkere’s landscape is dramatic and astoundingly resilient. Desert Winter is an intensely bright and joyous celebration of this resilience – the imminent burgeoning of the yam seed, the bush potato from which Kngwarreye derived her name. The underlying graphic matrix of parallel lines (reflecting the network of the branching tuberous plant) is painted here

            Est: $15,000 - $18,000

Reflected in this work is the Anooralya Yam, the most important plant in Emily’s custodianship. This hardy and fertile plant provides both a tuber vegetable and a seed bearing flower called Kame (Emily’s tribal name). The visual evidence of maturing species is no cause for alarm in terms of survival, for the yam tuber can always be found where cracks in the earth’s surface indicate its presence underground. Such application of red and yellow colours highlights the varied and changing hues in the life cycle of the Anooralya Yam and other food plants found near Alalgura on Utopia Station, west of Delmore Downs. From an aerial perspective we see sporadic clustered growth after summer rain. We also look on this exciting work as a water catchment area.

            Est: $25,000 - $35,000

Emily Kngwarreye's paintings of wildflowers reflect a stage in the growth cycle of the wild yam. Emily's middle name, Kame, is taken from the yam Dreaming site at Alhalkere. The nutritional value of the yam is hidden underground, in the swollen roots and their pod-like attachments which are difficult to locate as the plant's unpredictable growth patterns make harvest complicated and specialised. Traditionally, much effort is expended across large areas in the harvest of this valuable food. This work was commissioned by Allan Glaetzer, the store manager at Utopia. Glaetzer went on to set up Utopia Batik with the Community Council, which ran for nearly four years through the early 1990s. Later, he worked for the Central Land Council.

Emily Kame Kngwarreye is widely regarded as Australia's most important and successful Aboriginal artist. Her remarkable career lasted just 7 years prior to her death at 86 years of age in 1996. The painterly quality and originality of her works extended her influence beyond the reach of Aboriginal art and attracted an international audience ready to acclaim her new and innovative contemporary style. This thick textured fusion of deep-ochred yellow and pink hues gives a concentrated view of the desert's food sources after rain. Often hidden from view these seed, fruit and root vegetables are enormously bountiful. The requirement to understand the life cycles of all bush foods is necessary to survival. The dramatic transformation of the desert from bare to abundant is a display of the desert's power. Linked into this is women's ceremonial life called 'awelye' that is based on the belief that they help nurture the desert food sources by assuring future fertile generations.
