HOESSEIN ENAS, DATO : Morning Mist series, 1990

        Est: RM100,000 - RM150,000

Mohamed Hoessein Enas (1924-1995) came to Malaya from Bogor, Java in 1947. Enas, who was largely self-taught, mastered a European style of realist portraiture, and painted portraits of several Sultans and members of Malaysian royalty. In 1956, he spearheaded Majlis Kesenian Melayu (later, Angkatan Pelukis Semenanjung). This group was dedicated to depicting the Malay ideal of beauty and character. In 1990, five years before his death, Mohammed Hoessein Enas was appointed Royal Portrait Painter to HRH Sultan of Selangor. The Morning Mist series reputedly numbering only five is one of the most compelling of Dato’ Hoessein Enas’s oeuvre. It drew inspiration from his Indonesian idol Basoeki Abdullah (1915 to 1993) as much as from Rembrandt van Rijn’s (1606 to 1609), both of whom had worked on the subject of nubile damsels bathing by the waterfall.

One is struck by the elegance of the portraited, holding up her dress in front with her slender backlines exposed. Her hair is well-coiffured and sparkling silver jewellery on her ear, neck and hand adds a touch of class to the portrait of the attractive Eurasian expat once living in the littoral Tanjung Bungah, Penang. Noteworthy, too is the little sexy mole just above the right side of her upper lips and she has sultry eyes. Her long ear traces the line of her delicate oval face. The artist, Dato' Hoessein Enas, has rendered just the right soft tones to her flesh. Hoessein had stayed in Penang for sometime before he was enticed to Kuala Lumpur by then dealer extraordinaire and 'art-fixer' Frank Sullivan. The year 1956, the year he painted this portrait, was momentous for Dato' Hoessein Enas. He was granted Malaysian citizenship after he formed the Angkatan Pelukis Semenanjung (later SeMalaysia) based on a similar group he formed in Medan, Indonesia, where he originated. He also painted the famous 56 Malaysians portraits, commissioned by Shell Malaysia. In 1966, he was accorded a Retrospective by the National Art Gallery. The Sultan of Selangor invested him the title of 'royal painter' in 1990, and in 1991, conferred him with a Dato'ship. His first solo exhibition was at the Charniel Gallery in London in 1960.

        Est: RM8,000 - RM14,000

Coinciding with the 100-year anniversary of the birth of pioneer artist Mohd. Hoessein Enas (1924-1995), Henry Butcher Art Auctioneers is pleased to offer this early self portrait of the "Father of Malaysian Portrait Painting". It is dated 1949 when the artist would have been 24 or 25 and was painted in the same year that Hoessein moved from Penang to Kuala Lumpur to pursue a career as an artist. It is a significant moment in his career, but also in the history of Malaysian painting, capturing Hoessein's personal transition from trishaw driver and street artist to being Malaysia's first professional portrait painter. It serves as an advert for a gifted but newly established portrait painter seeking employment. As well as being a momentous year in the career of Hoessein, 1949 is also the year that Tunku Abdul Rahman returned to Malaysia from his studies in England. His arrival in Penang in January 1949 coincides with Hoessein's meeting with the art dealer Frank Sullivan. Sullivan would later serve as press secretary to Tunku Abdul Rahman and it is worth noting that Hoessein Enas's portrait of Sullivan, painted in the same year, can be seen in the National Art Gallery Malaysia. Tunku Abdul Rahman served as the first prime minister of the newly independent Malaysia in 1957. Hoessein would paint his portrait on at least two separate occasions, while Tunku Abdul Rahman would write the foreword to Hoessein's "Malaysians", an illustrated book of 1963, portraying the varied faces of a newly independent country. Pioneer artist Dato' Hoessein Enas was accorded a Retrospective by the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, in 1966, 10 years after being granted Malaysian citizenship. The Sultan of Selangor made him a royal painter in May 1990 and conferred the Dato' title on him in March 1991. Mohd. Hoessein Enas, Dato' (b. 1924 - 1995) Untitled, 1962

        Est: RM12,000 - RM20,000

Dato' Hoessein Enas had painted a plethora of women, mostly of Austronesian stock, around this region – Malay, Indonesian (mainly Javanese) and Filipinas, and the odd passing exotica from Burma and South Korea, in ritual cultural dresses and ornaments. Unless commissioned, like the one he painted of Caucasian women when on his England trip in 1960, he preferred young nubile girls from the rural areas, with a halo of innocence and unblemished natural complexion. Locally he had done the tribal Sarawak (like Iban and the Muruts (Lun Bawang), Selangor, Kedah and Kelantan. He also preferred the full studio concentration, instead of alfresco sketches. This portrait looks a bit more ‘modern' from his bevy of the portraited, with an angle that allowed her long tresses to flow naturally to the shoulders and chest. The pink dress also harmonizes with her rosy cheeks and lips. Before him, there were Peter Harris' itinerant pastel portrait sketches. Indonesian-born Dato' Hoessein Enas became a Malaysian citizen in 1956, and the National Art Gallery accorded him a Retrospective in 1966. He was bestowed the title of ‘royal painter' by the Sultan of Selangor, who also awarded him the Dato' title. His awards included the Unesco and United States fellowships. He was also a two-time Colombo Plan scholar and was also given an Asia Foundation grant. He founded the Angkatan Pelukis SeMalaysia (1956) based on a similar association he founded in Medan, Indonesia (1944).

The late Dato' Hossein Enas was a modern artist with extraordinary artistic flair in portraiture paintings. His subjects include family members, friends, and royal patrons. In 1990, the Sultan of Selangor bestowed him the title' Royal Portrait Painter'. Dato' Hossein Enas illustrated a stunning rendition of a young woman dressed in a traditional kebaya here, capturing her features in the most mesmerising way. Born in Bogor, Indonesia, in 1924 and died in Kuala Lumpur in 1995, Dato' Hossein arrived in Singapore in 1947 and became a Malaysian citizen in 1956. His wife and children moved to Penang with him in November of 1948. He began painting in Indonesia in 1938 and survived the Indo-Dutch struggle by painting propaganda posters for the various political parties in power. He received informal art training from a Japanese artist from 1942 until 1944 during the Japanese Occupation and was gifted oil paints by a Japanese officer. In 1956, he produced a series of 56 paintings called "The Malaysians", commissioned by Shell. He was a member of the board of the National Art Gallery until 1989. Among his achievements included the Unesco fellowships (1960), the United States fellowship (1969), an Asian Foundation grant (1960) and the Colombo Plan (twice in 1968 and 1976).

An enigmatic and beautiful image of a modern woman is presented, a symbol of cosmopolitan marked by urbanisation and cultural exchange. She wears a faint smile on her soft, full lips, with flowers in her hair. The proliferation of cinema and print media hugely influenced the attire and style of women. In this work, the beauty's hair is fashioned according to the modern trends of the period, and she wears a traditional kebaya blouse, resulting in a picturesque figure. Her elegance is well captured. Dato' Hoessein Enas was accorded a Retrospective by the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, in 1966 - 10 years after he obtained Malaysian citizenship, and a major posthumous exhibition was organised by the Ilham Gallery in Kuala Lumpur in December 2015. The Sultan of Selangor appointed him as a 'royal painter' (1990) and the next year, awarded him the Dato' title. Hoessein's first solo was in London, at the Charneil Gallery in Chelsea, in London, in 1960, when he won a UNESCO fellowship and an Asia Foundation grant. Other awards followed: the United States fellowship (1969), and the Colombo Plan twice (1968 and 1976). His auction record was set at the 2011 Henry Butcher Art Auction for his Morning Mist No. 5 (1992) which sold for a RM198,000 premium.

So, who would have thought that the figurative icon Dato' Hoessein Enas actually bizarrely painted horses (commissioned work), when there was not even a cat representing the animal kingdom in his repertoire? Admittedly, horses are an artist's nightmare and supreme challenge, there are specialised issues such as anatomy, speed, correct action depictions with even Science taken into consideration. While Hoessein is definitely no Xu Beihong or even in the Malaysian (Australian) pantheon, a Lee Joo-for, that it was by Hoessein Enas is enough, haughty as it may seem, bragging rights. Yes, the possessor of a Hoessein Enas on horses, not one but six of them prancing maniacally. Indonesian-born art pioneer Hoessein Enas boasts of a chequered life from Dutch-Indonesia to his 1947 flight to Singapore and then Penang and finally Kuala Lumpur. Like the Indonesian artists group he founded, he repeated it in Malaysia, with Angkatan Pelukis Semenanjung (later SeMalaysia). After being granted a Malayan citizen in 1956, he was made a royal artist in May 1990 by then Sultan of Selangor, who also conferred him the Dato'ship in March 1991. Est: RM35,000 - RM60,000

It is no secret that Dato' Hoessein Enas loved painting women… Malays, Iban and for a little exotica, Korean, Javanese, Balinese and as in here, Burmese (probably the only portrait of Burmese lady). The classic beauty with the ethnic costume offering an exotic embellishment. When he was in London under a UNESCO Fellowship and Asia Foundation grant in 1960, he had done portraits of a bevy of Caucasian lasses, and also slipped in a solo at the Charniel Gallery in Chelsea, London. Dato' Hoessein shows the demure Burmese woman seated on a chair sideways, unlike the great U Lun Gywe’s standard of having them in dancing poses and with posteriors protruding. Her back is slightly turned, her pretty face is in profile accentuating the slender neck and the radiant eyelashes. The woman, who looks modernised, does not seem to be in her Myanmar habitat, as her face is sans the white thanaka cosmetic paste. There is a regal air about her, and her elegance shows in her dressing: A short muslin eingyi (blouse) with revealing waistline shows some body flesh, and the only spark of striking colour can be seen in the longyi sarong. Pioneer artist Dato' Hoessein Enas was accorded a Retrospective by the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, in 1966, 10 years after being granted Malaysian citizenship. His awards include the Unesco fellowships (1960), the United States fellowship (1969), an Asian Foundation grant (1960) and the Colombo Plan (twice in 1968 and 1976).

        Mohd. Hoessein Enas, Dato' (b. Indonesia, 1924 - 1995) Melor, 1989

        Est: RM20,000 - RM35,000

Dato' Hoessein Enas relished doing portraits in pastels as it was fast and spontaneous and it helped honed his skills in eye-hand coordination not only in getting the aura and character but also that of beauty, as his subjects were invariably nubile young maidens from various ethnic communities – Malay, Sarawakian, Javanese, Korean, Burmese. Sometimes, his grown-up daughters, all of them pretty, were used as his models, painted with greater adoration and love. While the oil commissions fetched higher prices, the pastel portraits were not diminished in quality. In this work, Melor, the young beauty is clothed in a white transparent blouse signifying purity and showing glimpses of her tender skin, and her head is wrapped in red cloth maybe to diminish any sense of sensuality. She is imbued with ravishing youth and innocence. Some of Hoessein’s best portraitures can be gleaned in the 56 commissioned Shell paintings done in 1956, under the banner, The Malaysians. The Angkatan Pelukis SeMalaysia he founded in 1956, after a similar association in Medan in Indonesia in 1944, espoused The Cult of the Figure. Hoessein, who hailed from Indonesia with the solid figurative tradition of Basuki Abdullah and Dullah, was dubbed by the Malaysian media as the Man With The Golden Hands. Dato' Hoessein Enas was accorded a Retrospective by the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, in 1966 – 10 years after he obtained Malaysian citizenship, and a major posthumous exhibition was organised by the Ilham Gallery in Kuala Lumpur in December 2015. The Sultan of Selangor appointed him as a ‘royal painter’ (1990) and the next year, awarded him the Dato’ title. Hoessein’s first solo was in London, at the Charneil Gallery in Chelsea, in London, in 1960, when he won a UNESCO fellowship and an Asia Foundation grant. Other awards followed: the United States fellowship (1969), and the Colombo Plan twice (1968 and 1976). His auction record was set at the 2011 Henry Butcher Art Auction for his Morning Mist No. 4 (1991-1992) which sold for a RM198,000 premium.

This is one of only two works recorded to have been done by Dato' Hoessein Enas in 1981. After a coronary bypass in London, he had stopped painting until 1982, but somehow got to paint two works, not the more elaborate oil, but this portrait in pastel on paper and another called Suci Murni in watercolour on paper. He had been recorded to have said he had lost hope of picking up the brushes again after the operation, but this 1981 work showed his determination and love for art conquered all. He was back with a vengeance in 1983 when commissioned to paint then Sarawak Chief Minister Taib Mahmud and his family, and Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. The portrait of Tina, who looked pre-teen and in simple tees, is done with such loving affection. He was quoted to have said: “As a portrait painter, I feel the need to interpret the silent, latent and unstated characteristics of my chosen subject, as well as to analyse and bring to life hidden emotions and thoughts beneath the surface.” One of the most prominent Malaysian pioneer artists, Indonesian-born Dato' Hoessein Enas founded the Angkatan Pelukis Semenanjung (later SeMalaysia) which set the figurative tradition in the Merdeka years. Est: RM50,000 - RM80,000

One of the most prominent Malaysian pioneer artists, Indonesian-born Dato' Hoessein Enas founded the Angkatan Pelukis Semenanjung (later SeMalaysia) which set the figurative tradition in the Merdeka years. Famously known as the Father of Portraits in Malaysia, Dato Mohammed Hoessein Enas was born in Bogor, Indonesia in 1924. He migrated to Malaysia in 1947 to escape the aftermath of the Indonesian National Revolution. From 1960-1990, he received many awards including the UNESCO Fellowship Award Winner in Art and Selangor Royal Portrait Artist. His works have been exhibited in various notable exhibitions in Kuala Lumpur, Paris, Hong Kong and Singapore. All his portraits exude an emphasis on culture whether it’s in the actions of his subject, their clothes or their livelihood. The East Coast Girl shows a shy expression from the subject while the vibrant use of colours on her clothes and headpiece suggests enthusiasm and positivity.

        Est: RM16,000 - RM32,000

Dato’ Hoessein Enas’ portfolio of portraits, his forte, had a female bias. In oil or pastels, the models are mostly nubile village girls from different backgrounds like from Kedah, Selangor, tribal Sarawak and the indigenous groups in peninsular Malaysia. Also in his repertoire were more sophisticated women as well as a bevy of natural beauties from Java, where he originated. Temperament-wise, there were the innocent and rustic to the sensuous and coquette, at times saucy. The portrait here is a kampung damsel, with a headcloth loosely wrapped over her head in side profile, with a coquettish almond eye cocked at something not in the picture, maybe a potential jodoh (suitor), as she looked of the ripe marriageable age. As always, the women are shown clad in a sarong, her shoulders bare. Dato’ Hoessein Enas was schooled in the best portrait tradition in Indonesia with mentors like Basuki Abdullah. Founder of national associations in Indonesia and Malaysia specialising in figures, he was accorded ‘royal’ status by the Sultan of Selangor who also bestowed him the ‘Dato’ title. He was accorded a Retrospective by the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, in 1966. His laurels include fellowships from UNESCO (1960) and the United States (1968), an Asia Foundation grant (1960) and the Colombo Plan (1968). He had the distinction of his first solo in London, at the Charniel Gallery in 1960. In 1956, he painted the different ethnic portraits of Malaysia in a Shell-commissioned project called The Malaysians. There’s nothing like hands-on learning on home cooking and food preparation from one’s own mother, grandmother or auntie, especially if they make the most scrumptious Kukus or Laksa Johor, or kueh kochi santan, a favourite sweet snack among all the races. It’s made from kneaded gelatinous rice dough stuffed with grated coconut and palm sugar wrapped in slightly scalded folded banana leaves. Girls of marriageable age during Dato’ Hoessein Enas’ time would have better chances of better suitors if they are also skilled in cooking, besides looks and compatibility. The gorgeous demure girl is concentrating on the wrapping... Trust Malaysia to have one of the most flamboyant of pioneer artists in Indonesian-born Hoessein Enas, whose chequered life involved resistance against the Dutch colonial masters, printing own legal currency, and escape in the rough seas from Java to Singapore. So, who would have thought that the figurative icon Dato’ Hoessein Enas actually bizarrely painted horses (commissioned work), when there was not even a cat representing the animal kingdom in his repertoire? Admittedly, horses are an artist’s nightmare and supreme challenge, there are specialised issues such as anatomy, speed, correct action depictions with even Science taken into consideration. The woman with a mole above her right upper lip is not a family member, but her seated pose in bluish low-cut baju kebaya and sarong and the way she carried herself suggested someone with urbane demeanour. The portraiture in the vein of Basoeki Abdullah and Dullah is typical of the figurative tradition of the Angkatan Pelukis SeMalaysia founded in 1956 by Dato' Mohd Hoessein Enas, who also founded the Angkatan Pelukis Indonesia, in Medan, in 1944. Kelantanese Dancer first appeared at Sotheby’s Southeast Asian auction in Singapore on Oct 5, 1996. This was done before he went for his second bypass operation in the United States in 1992. It’s interesting to note that the costumes now are brightly coloured and more elaborate compared to this prim dull-coloured dress worn by this female dancer, with a dark selendang (sash) over her blouse and chequered sarong. Only an earring and flowers on her sanggul (bunched hair tied at the back of the head) adorn her head, there is no headdress or armlet. The dance is usually accompanied by music from the rebani ubi, kendang and rebab, but the full gamelan orchestra is absent here, signifying a more private event. Indonesian-born Dato’ Hoessein Enas was the founder-president of the Angkatan Pelukis SeMalaysia (then Majlis Kesenian Melayu), which he formed in 1956. He headed it until 1964. Here we get a rare glimpse into the man behind the art. In this self-portrait, painted when the artist was forty six years of age, we see a man of intensity and steely determination, and in intense contemplation. The features are modelled carefully with fine brushstrokes, and a sense of mystery is evoked with shadows surrounding the face and neck. Indonesian-born Hoessein Enas led a chequered life, braving the rough seas to escape from the Dutch in December 1947 from Java to Singapore, where he briefly worked as a rickshaw-rider before moving to Penang and finally to Selangor. The Bee Gees song, New York Mining Disaster 1941, would have been an apt dirge to go with this painting by Dato’ Hoessein Enas. What was it about the Puchong tin-mining tragedy in 1984 that moved Hoessein, inured to portraitures and a royal artist at that, to paint about the landslide that caused the open-cast tin-mining Dredge No. 5 to collapse and took 13 lives? When the tin-mining licences expired in 1985, the Selangor State Government started embarking on a massive commercial and residential development. Hoessein had done a much earlier painting of a Samsui woman balancing construction materials up a rickety plank. The Hakka Samsui woman, now no more, were used to the dangers of their tough job. They had sworn to celibacy and lived frugally but often saved a tidy sum for their ‘retirement’. But Hoessein had given this work a contemporary treatment with a prismatic filter, showing a worker on the wobbly walking plank with a massive pipe alongside all set at a precarious height.Indonesian-born Hoessein Enas founded the Angkatan Pelukis Semenanjung (later SeMalaysia), based on a similar society he formed in Indonesia. Dato Hoessein Enas rarely used the titillating word, nude, except maybe in this one. Still, he practised discretion when painting women in provocative poses, unlike his Indonesian mentor Basuki Abdullah (1915-1993). There were two nude drawing, both dated from 1954, which were shown in a dedicated exhibition at Ilham Gallery in Kuala Lumpur in December 2015, but they were fairly tame. In this work, the subject is shown half-naked but when it comes to the crucial part, it is camouflaged with a cotton-wool mist of white and by the long black tresses streaking down her left shoulder. The woman, with well-penciled eyebrows, looks away in a flush of modesty, and it is her melancholy beady eyes that rivets the viewer’s attention rather than to look for signs of immodesty. Indeed, Hoessein had done more racy works like Memory – 24 Years and Now (1990), Oh, Yes (1986), Never More (1992) and of course, his Morning Mist series of bathers, of which No. 4 (1991-1992) still holds his auction record of RM198,000, set in the Henry Butcher auction in 2011.Indonesian-born Hoessein Enas led a chequered life, braving the rough seas to escape from the Dutch in December 1947 from Java to Singapore, where he briefly worked as a rickshaw-rider before moving to Penang and finally to Selangor. Est: RM80,000 - RM100,000

Known as 'The Man with the Golden Arm', Mohd Hoessein Enas, Dato' was a masterful portrait painter who not only portrayed the beautiful faces of the people but also captured their soul and emotion. He had gained recognition as an accomplished portrait painter in 1954, six years after migrating to Kuala Lumpur attracting the attention of Frank Sullivan, the former press secretary to Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj. He had also been commissioned to paint portraits of prominent figures such as former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, and members of the royal family. Kelantanese Dancer is perhaps a depiction of the traditional Malay dance called Mak Yong, a performing art that incorporates ritual, dance, drama, song and traditional instrumental music in a captivating form of folk theatre. A woman is illustrated seated on the floor while performing the dance with grace and enthusiasm. A pair of musicians is seen on the far right playing the gendang (drum) and gamelan. Dato' Mohd. Hoessein Enas co-founded Angkatan Seni Rupa Indonesia in Medan and was its first president in 1944.
