      Aug. 26, 2023

      P. COTTIN (*1823) after ENDER (*1822), Torquato Tasso am Hof von Ferrara, 1863, Aquatint

      Est: €1,800 - €2,400

Pierre Cottin (1823 La Chapelle-St-Denis - 1886 Paris) after Eduard Ender (1822 - 1883 ): Torquato Tasso am Hof von Ferrara deklamierend, 1863, Aquatint Technique: Aquatint on Paper Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "Peint par Édouard Ender / Verlag von Stammler & Karlstein in Wien (Vervielfaltigung Vorbehalten) / Gravé par Pierre Cottin". 1863 _ Paris, London, Bruxelles, La Haye.". Date: 1863 Description: When one thinks of Torquato Tasso, his major work Gerusalemme liberata immediately comes to mind. The fictional tale about Gottfried von Bouillon during the conquest of Jerusalem immediately cast a spell on numerous artists and almost all important painters of the Baroque period included Tankred, Rinaldo or Armida in their repertoire. In the 19th century, the story experienced a new flowering through the paintings of the Casino Massimo in Rome by the Nazarenes. But it was precisely after this that attention changed markedly: the literary work receded into the background and Tasso as a human being and poet entered the stage of the visual arts. Parallel to the awakening interest in Raphael's life, Tasso's multi-layered personality is illuminated, as it were in order to be able to draw conclusions about the sources of inspiration for his art from the social structure. Goethe, as always, played an active part in this transformation with his Tasso. Our print after the model by the Viennese history painter Eduard Ender shows Tasso declaiming his verses at the court of the Este. Why this motif became more and more interesting for artists becomes clear from this picture: Tasso is shown here as an artist not as a servant of the princes, but as at least intellectually superior. He determines, he is listened to. Thus, the figure of Tasso reflects an ideal aspiration of artists. Breaking out of conventions and ranks is celebrated here. Keywords: Torquato Tasso; Gerusalemme liberata; Gottfried von Bouillon; Conquest of Jerusalem; Tankred; Rinaldo; Armida; Baroque painter; Casino Massimo; Nazarene; Raphael; Complexity; Personality; Goethe; Tasso (Goethe); Eduard Ender; Court of the Este; Artists; Princes; Ideal aspiration; Conventions; Ranks, 19th century, Romanticism, Genre, Italy,
