Bernhard Endres, who lived in Rome from 1838 to 1840, followed the example of Italian Renaissance painting and often copied these masterpieces. He was particularly influenced by Raffael to whom the present painting, in its harmonious composition, the fine colouring and delicate background, is deeply indebted.
