          • Eng Tay (b. 1947) A Friend Indeed, 2007
            May. 19, 2024

            Eng Tay (b. 1947) A Friend Indeed, 2007

            Est: RM30,000 - RM50,000

Delicately modelled using a combination of earthy brown tones, A Friend Indeed is a celebration of friendship between two ladies. A heartwarming image, the ladies hands are held closely together as one, enhanced by a soft glow around the figures. The tenderness in the scene is realised through the soft harmonies of colour, play of light over the figures, and refined textures. In life, it's important to treasure sincere relationship and genuine friendship. New York-based Eng Tay studied at the Art Students League (1968-1972) and the School of Visual Arts, both in New York. He had nearly 100 solos in Asia, Europe and the United States. He worked as a graphic designer for the Red Book magazine until 1978 when he decided to go full time. He was given a Retrospective by Galeri Petronas in 2009. It was called Eng Tay: The Exhibition. His works are in the collection of the Fukuyama Museum of Art, Hiroshima, Japan; Taipei Fine Art Museum, Taiwan; the Frankie Valli Estate, the Merv Griffin Estate and the New York University. He has monumental sculptures in Kiaraville and Seni condominiums in Mont Kiara, Zehn Bukit Pantai in Bangsar and the Marc Residences near KLCC.

            Eng Tay (b. 1947) Kiaraville, 2005

            Est: RM2,000 - RM3,500

Kiaraville is a glorious example of Eng Tay's iconic trio of musicians executed through the medium of etching. Using a palette of predominantly warm colours, the work depicts three figures performing in harmony surrounded by nature. While the music is being played, their bodies move along in unison with the mellifluous melody. Scenes like these are filled with warmth and delight, exuding a sense of calm on the viewer. New York-based Eng Tay studied at the Art Students League (1968-1972) and the School of Visual Arts, both in New York. He had nearly 100 solos in Asia, Europe and the United States. • Eng Tay (b. 1947) Untitled
            Jan. 14, 2024

            Eng Tay (b. 1947) Untitled

            Est: RM22,000 - RM35,000

Eng Tay's works revolve around the theme of relationships – between husband and wife, mother and child, brothers and sisters; and even in Post-911, communal togetherness as in his Columbus Park (New York) paintings. These endearing subject matters – whether executed in etchings, paintings or sculptures – are played out in exaggerated shapes, whimsical features, simple costumes and changing backdrops in soothing, melancholic colours. Much travelled and his heart drawn towards mostly traditional communities, Eng Tay harps on the essential things that define us, despite having lived away from home in New York for 44 years. He seems to be telling us through every pore of pigment in his painting that love indeed is what makes the world go round. A handheld fan as a symbol of romance, hands held together celebrating the good life, and most of all, the precious moments of togetherness are all symbols of affection in Eng Tay's works. The world of innocence and old-world charm stays in the art of Eng Tay, whose full name is Tay Eng Chye, despite his sophistication developed through travels and being based in the Big Apple. After secondary education in Alor Setar, he took a bold gamble and headed for New York City to study art at the Art Students League (1969-1972) and then the Pratt Graphics Centre (1972-1977). He started having solo exhibitions in the United States of his prints, paintings and sculptures before etching his name back in Malaysia and to the rest of Asia. He had a retrospective when Galeri Petronas hosted him in the blockbuster exhibition Eng Tay: The Exhibition in 2009.

“Emotions, relationships, colour, light, wind or sounds that I experienced last night, or many years before, are the raw materials with which I try to create ‘new’ moments – the images my etchings represent – rooted in memory.” Eng Tay was born in 1947 in Kedah, West Malaysia. In 1968, he moved to New York City and studied at the Arts Student League, School of Visual Arts and Pratt Graphics Center. Here he studied graphic design, painting and printmaking. He worked in the graphic arts field until 1978, when he undertook several painting trips through out South America and Indonesia. These trips formed a basis for the types of scenes and moments that became his subject matter.

The woolly brown textures enhance the creature comfort of the two adults embracing on the plush sofa, with palpable coldness in the air. The child is seen clasping his hands together. Perhaps, the baby fat of the plumb body will suffice. Indoors, all wrapped up and cuddled up from the chilly winds outside, and with the heater on, the occupants appear contented as can be gleaned from their faces. It's one of the drawbacks, if at all, in staying in places which have autumn and winter. Eng Tay, nee Tay Eng Chye, made a beeline for the Big Apple, studying at the Art Students League (1968-1972) and the School of Visual Arts (1972-1978), both in New York. He first made his mark in printmaking, before embarking on paintings, large canvases, and monumental sculptures in bronze. With nearly 100 solos in the United States and Europe and Asia, he travelled extensively. In 2009, he was accorded a Retrospective by Galeri Petronas called simply, Eng Tay: The Exhibition. His monumental sculptures in Kuala Lumpur adorn the Kiaraville SENI condominiums in Mont Kiara, the Zehn condominium in Pantai Hills and Marc condominium near KLCC. His works are in the collection of the Taipei Fine Arts Museum; the Fukuyama Museum of Art, Hiroshima in Japan; the Frankie Valli Estate (United States); the Merv Griffin Estate (United States); and the New York University.

The Asian Family Unit is under threat today, what with more economical travel and all the electronic visceral distractions. Family members are seldom home and don't even meet during mealtimes as in the past, with the Confucian axiology constantly being challenged and obverted, if not subverted. More than nostalgia, Eng Tay's canvas exudes old-fashioned values of family love and time together. The meals, the light banter and small talk, even the sharing of tears, in the cosy warmth of the home interior often couched in darker colours as a blanket of solace. It was only after the Sept 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Centre that Eng Tay ventures outdoors, bringing neighbours and strangers, irregardless of ethnicities, into an informal communion. But love has to be fostered within the family before it can embrace the greater good of a larger community. Eng Tay, nee Tay Eng Chye, has excelled as a painter, printmaker and sculptor since he went to New York City to study at the Art Students League and then the Pratt Graphics Centre. The high point of his career was when he was honoured with a Retrospective by Galeri Petronas in 2009, which was simply called Eng Tay, The Exhibition. He travels widely even to South America, and especially the rural communities, and all over Asia, where he got insights and inspirations to his figure-types which he also made into monumental sculptures at Kiaraville (Mont Kiara), Zehn condominiums (Pantai Hills) and Marc Residences. His works are among others, in the collection of the Fukuyama Museum of Art, Hiroshima (Japan), the Taipei Fine Art Museum (Taiwan), the New York University, the Frankie Valli Estate and the Merv Griffin Estate (both in the United States).

In a world increasingly riven by hate and rivalry, Eng Tay's utopia of family life and togetherness, even only on canvas, are heart-tugging paeans of love that reminds us of the forgetfulness of being human. Spending precious time together in simple pleasures can be far more touching and meaningful than the perfunctory gesture of showering each other with expensive gifts. It may just be an intimate tete a tete over tea, or playing chess in the park, or in this case creating a melodious tune that reverberates in the soul long after playing. As always, there is always the sense of plentiful, as shown by the bowl of fruits and vegetables on the small table covered with embroidered floral-lace cloth. It's love that binds in spirit and makes the world go round. The theme gains greater resonance ever since the Sept 11, 2001 terror attacks on the World Trade Tower in New York, just a stone's throw from one of Eng Tay's apartments. Eng Tay has gained international recognition in the United States and Asia for his endearing figure types finely honed from his travels all over, especially to traditional societies, and from a half-century of creating in paint, prints and sculptures after his studies at the Art Students League, the New York School of Visual Arts and the Pratt Graphics Centre. Galeri Petronas honoured him with a Retrospective called Eng Tay: The Exhibition in 2009. His works are collected by institutions in Japan, United States, Taiwan and Malaysia, and he has commissioned monumental sculptures in Kuala Lumpur (Kiaraville SENI Condominiums in Mont Kiara, the Zehn Condominium in Pantai Hills, and the Marc Residences near KLCC).

Kiaraville is a glorious example of Eng Tay's iconic trio of musicians executed through the medium of etching. Using a palette of predominantly warm colours, the work depicts three figures performing in harmony surrounded by nature. While the music is being played, their bodies move along in unison with the melody. Scenes like these are filled with warmth and delight, exuding a sense of calm on the viewer. New York-based Eng Tay studied at the Art Students League (1968-1972) and the School of Visual Arts, both in New York. He had nearly 100 solos in Asia, Europe and the United States.

From the tragic ashes of the World Trade Centre in 911 springs a new hope, a better tomorrow, and a return to the human touch. Eng Tay, who witnessed the double-plane assaults of the twin towers from his White Street studio in New York, presents a bruised but hopeful world under healing with a simplicity of tones and soft ascetic colours. Even the landscape visible from the four arches seems aglow despite the eventide. In this Columbus Park Series crafted from the heart of New York’s Chinatown, Eng Tay has created a beacon of hope, a return to intimacy and the human touch. This park, once called Paradise Park, is a favourite recreation spot where people play mahjong or Chinese chess, practise daiji martial arts or perform traditional dance and music though it was a dangerous ghetto in the 19th century. Salvation lies in moving on positively, after the brazen attacks on Sept 11, 2001 by two coordinated planes by suicide terrorists. The high point of Eng Tay’s art career was when he was given a Retrospective by Galeri Petronas in 2009. Although he started painting earlier in Alor Star, Eng Tay made his way to New York to study at the Art Students League (1969-1972) and then the Pratt Graphics Centre (1972-1977). He has produced works in ceramics, sculptures (in bronze, in editions of 25), paintings and prints, primarily etchings. His monumental sculptures can be found in Kiaraville SENI, Marc Residences, and Zehn condominiums in Kuala Lumpur. His works are in the collection of the Taipei Fine Arts Museum; the Fukuyama Museum of Art, Hiroshima in Japan; the New York University; the Frankie Valli Estate and the Merv Griffin Estate, both in the United States.

Artists are like prophets in the process of social changes and more cataclysmic for human kind, the anthropogenic climate change. Eng Tay is known, in his prints and sculptures and later his oil canvases, for his espousal of the Family Unit and the universal core of Asian values. Everything is couched in the embalming dark interiors, hosting the family of four clustered intimately close together, the Mother figure ensconced on a sofa, with the wafting strains of music from the plugging of the guitar chords, and the intoxicating scent of plucked flowers, the magnolia. For all the detachment of the techie generation of mobile phones and computers, there is nothing like moments spent and cherished together as a family, fostering love and understanding. The high point of Eng Tay’s art career was when he was given a Retrospective by Galeri Petronas in 2009. Eng Tay’s travels across the world formed a basis for the types of scenes and moments that became his subject matter – images of people playing music, family moments and interactions, market scenes and daily rituals. Eng Tay works in several media – limited edition etchings, painting and sculpture. Most of his work has found its greatest expression when addressing the concept of family – the poetry of the family, of man and woman, of children, of friendship, of music and of the natural world, all translated through sculptures too.

            ENG TAY : Family, 1991

            Est: RM35,000 - RM55,000

Eng Tay was born in 1947 in Kedah, West Malaysia. In 1968, he moved to New York City and studied at the Arts Student League, School of Visual Arts and Pratt Graphics Center. These trips formed a basis for the types of scenes and moments that became his subject matter – images of people playing music, family moments and interactions, market scenes and daily rituals. In Eng Tay’s typical manner, he depicts a family of three in the foreground, adorned with calming hued attires that complement one another. In this artwork, it seems as if the family is having a conversation that’s light and comfortable and the relationship depicted is close. The light, muted background provides prominence to the subject matters.
