Julius Ussy Engelhard Udet u. Greim Fliegen 1919 47.25 h x 34.375 w in (120 x 87 cm) Engelhard takes a break from his charming Art Deco imagery to create a compelling and dynamic design: the unsettling perspective, the dash lines of movement, and the gray abstracted plane beneath a bold red model form a gripping scene. The event depicted is an aerobatic show performed by Ernst Udet and Robert Ritter von Greim, both German aviation pilots in World War I who became national heroes for their triumphant military work. After the war, they continued practicing their passions by putting on top-of-the-line air shows with dangerous maneuvers and awe-inspiring feats. In World War II, both men were recruited for the Luftwaffe; Udet played a key role in reorganizing the German Air Force and organizing the Battle of Britain. Sadly, both men also died from suicide. ARTIST: JULIUS USSY ENGELHARD (1883-1964) SIZE: 36 3/4 x 49 1/4 in./93.3 x 125.2 cm PRINTER: Oscar Consée, München DESCRIPTION: This poster “was also produced in another version bearing the text ‘Bolshevism brings War, Unemployment and Hunger.’ Both posters were directed against the German Spartacus League... which attempted to bring about a Communist revolution in Germany in 1918 and 1919. Their accusations must be seen against a background of appalling want. The swift growth of Germany’s population in the second half of the nineteenth century made for a dependence on imported foodstuffs. She was therefore particularly vulnerable to the Allied blockade during the First World War. Deaths from actual starvation and from diseases caused or aggravated by malnutrition rose dramatically. It is true that the armistice in 1918 brought an easing of the blockade but the hunger remained for a long time and reached a new height during the revolutionary period; the Spartacists therefore provided a convenient scapegoat for reactionary groups such as the Freikorps. It is interesting that the ape-figures so common in Allied propaganda of the 1914-1918 war hardly appear in German war propaganda; it is only during the post-war revolutionary period that they are constantly used as a symbol of Anarchy and Bolshevism” (Imperial War Museum, p. 23). Both this poster ("Distress and Ruin Follow Anarchy") and another variation (with the caption "Bolshevism brings War, Unemployment and Hunger") were directed against the German Spartacus League. This movement aimed at stirring a Communist revolution within Germany on the basis of the discontentment brought on by the starvation and privation that plagued Germany after the First World War. Ironically, the vicious King Kong-like figure was successfully used by the Allies during the war to depict the Germans and then in the post-war revolutionary period was co-opted by the Germans to depict Bolshevists and Anarchists. Founded in 1926 as Deutsche Luft Hansa Akteingesellschaft, in the company later consolidated its name to Deutsche Lufthansa in 1933.

JULIUS USSY ENGELHARD (1883-1964) ELEND UND UNTERGANG FOLGEN DER ANARCHIE. 1918. 49 1/4x36 1/2 inches, 125x92 3/4 cm. Oscar Consee, Munich. Condition B / B+: repaired tear through bottom edge into text and image; tape on verso along tears and edges; tears, creases, abrasions and discoloration in margins and image; vertical and horizontal folds. Paper. A smoking red bomb in one hand and a knife in the other, a fanged, angry ape figure is treacherously poised against a yellow background. Both this poster ("Distress and Ruin Follow Anarchy") and a variation from 1919 with the caption "Bolshevism brings War, Unemployment and Hunger," were directed against the German Spartacus League. This was a movement aimed at stirring a Communist revolution in Germany on the basis of the discontentment brought on by the starvation and privation that plagued Germany after the First World War. Ironically, the vicious ape figure was successfully used by the Allies during the war to depict the Germans, and later, in the post-war revolutionary period, was co-opted by the Germans to depict Bolshevists and Anarchists.
