Robert Engelhorn (1856-1933), A Bavarian Party, around 1900

      Est: €2,400 - €3,000

Oil on canvas Germany, around 1900 Robert Engelhorn (1856-1933) - German portrait, genre and landscape painter Signed and inscribed lower right 'H. R. Engelhorn. Baden' A life size lively representation of a typical social event Overall dimensions, framed: 106.5 x 194 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany A colorful description of society The German painter Robert Engelhorn painted the present genre scene in the early 1900's and hereby created one of his typical genre scenes, that mainly characterize the artistic output of his stay in Munich. The painting depicts a Bavarian party in a Bavarian inn. At a long table a cheerful group of older men has gathered, supervised by two tavern ladies in traditional costumes. On the left side, a bearded man has raised for a speech, which seems to amuse the carefully listening group. Robert Engelhorn was very successful in painting genre scenes that were precisely captured, elaborately executed and therefore rendered very realistic visual impressions. The present painting is a compelling example of his craftsmanship. The painting is well presented and the fine details still in good order. It is signed and inscribed lower right 'H. R. Engelhorn. Baden'. The canvas shows a number of tiny holes and old punches repaired by patches on the verso. The canvas is partially retouched. There are tiny discolored areas of restoration visible to the naked eye; inspection under UV light reveals further scattered retouching and light restoration. The wooden frame shows small traces of age and use. The framed work measures 106.5 x 194 cm and the size of the stretcher is 90 x 176 cm. Robert Engelhorn (1856-1933) The painter Robert Engelhorn started his artistic training at the Academy of Arts in Karlsruhe under Ernst Hildebrand (1833-1924), followed by further education through Jules-Joseph Lefebvre (1856-1944) in Paris. Engelhorn spent some time in Munich, where he mainly devoted himself to genre painting. In Baden-Baden, he focused on portrait and landscape painting. In 1897, the painter joined the Great Art Exhibition in Berlin and in 1911 the exhibition at the Munich Crystal Palace. Parallel to his artistic activity, Robert Engelhorn engaged himself as patron and provided great financial support for the building of the Kunsthalle in Baden-Baden, opened in 1909. Besides, the artist also initiated the artist's association 'Freie Künstlervereinigung Baden-Baden'. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
