His path led to Germany where he held a professorship for free painting in Berlin. Engelman's work was expressive, full of imagery and bold colour. His early works reveal an affinity to the Cobra Movement. Mythical creatures and figures between human and animal constantly appear in his work. In later work, nature became a great source of inspiration to Engelman. A monograph on his life as a painter was published in 2008 - Martin Engelman, Paintings 1958-1992, by Wienand Verlag.
