      Pencil on paper Germany, circa 1920 Richard Engelmann (1868-1966) – German sculptor, etcher and graphic artist Signed ‘Richard Engelmann’ lower right in pencil Sheet dimensions: 44 x 22.7 cm Condition: The drawing bears a long crease diagonal in the right sheet area as well as overall further, but shorter creases. There is a tiny tear (c. 0.7 cm), the sheet is overall slightly toned due to age. The overall impression is good, consistent with age. The sheet measures 44 x 22.7 cm. Richard Engelmann (1868-1966) Richard Engelmann was born in Bayreuth and started his artistic training at the Academy in Munich in 1892/93. Study trips allowed him to discover Florence from 1886 to 1893 and the Académie Julian in Paris from 1896 to 1899, where he meet, for instance, Auguste Rodin. In 1899 Engelmann established himself in Berlin, where he had close contact to the Berlin Secession. A highly regarded sculptor, Engelmann was appointed to the Weimar Saxon Grand Ducal Art School in 1913, where he worked until 1919. In 1919/20 he was temporarily also active at the Bauhaus in Weimar. His sculptural oeuvre is mainly characterized by the depiction of female nudes, often executed in monumental size.
