            Est: €1,500 - €2,000

WILLIAM DUFFIELD ( England,1816-1863). "Still life of hunting", 1863. Oil on canvas. Presents atelier stamp. Preserves period frame. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 67,5 x 103 cm; 78 x 114 cm (frame). Still life of hunting worked in neutral tones that are combined with a quality range that contributes warmth to the scene, looking for the luminous variation and the contrast of lights and shades. Formally, the illusionist taste of the composition, with elements that stand out, also stands out. The still life was one of the most characteristic genres. The term appeared at the end of the 16th century. Duffield was born in Bath, where he began his artistic training. At a very early age he showed a decided predilection and talent for drawing. George Doo, the engraver, impressed by Duffield's elaborate pen and ink sketches and the faithful copies of his engravings, offered to take him as his pupil. Years later he began to study under George Lance, and was noted for his unceasing attention and assiduity as a student at the Royal Academy. After completing the usual course of study in London, he returned to Bath and then went to Antwerp, where, under the direction of Egide Charles Gustave Wappers, he worked for two years.

Each mounted to original board (slightly soiled), with letterpress text below the image on the mount.William England, who was at first a daguerreotype portraitist in London between 1840 - 1845, gave up portraiture in 1854 and dedicated himself to landscape photography. He was well-travelled and visited and photographed the USA (specifically Niagara Falls), Paris, Switzerland, Tyrol and Italy. In 1886 he became the vice-president and then president of the London Photographic Society. He often placed people in his landscapes giving them a very picturesque appearance and the strong contrasts point to his technically perfected work methods. – Each slightly faded in left side, otherwise strong prints in very good condition.
