Barney (1881-1966) was the sister of architect Frank Lloyd Wright and the illustrator of several children's books, including those of L. Frank Baum, as well as cover designs and illustrations for numerous magazines throughout the 1920s-40s. She was successful and creative from an early age; during the depression and subsequent years, she expanded her repertoire into landscapes, needlepoint tapestry, and even fashion shoe designing. "She was largely responsible for revolutionizing the quality of illustration in children's readers"--Walter Reed, "The Illustrator in America 1860-2000," page 165. Towne was a prolific and successful writer and editor in his day, at the helm of such major publications as The Smart Set and Harper's Bazaar. In his later years, Towne taught at Columbia University and influenced a new generation of writers and poets including Catcher in the Rye author J. D. Salinger.

          War Gardens. 1919.

          Est: $800 - $1,000

ARTIST: MAGINEL WRIGHT ENRIGHT (1877-1966) SIZE: 22 x 29 3/8 in./55.8 x 74.6 cm DESCRIPTION: Most of the 30 million soldiers who had taken part in World War I had been farmers, and ploughed fields before they held rifles. Just before the U.S. entered the War in 1917, Charles Lathrop Pack conceived of "war gardens," using homestead lawns for produce gardens, and encouraging canning and preserving fruits and vegetables. By 1919, the war had ended, but food shortages had not. Enright treats the predicament, and the plight, in humorous fashion – the trenches of the Western Front become the furrows of a field, while pumpkins and squash and radishes and carrots run screaming from a gardener and her hoe. A hundred years later, small-scale food gardens and vegetarianism have renewed interest as the effects of factory farming and the contribution of livestock to climate change become more apparent.
