C.ERMER(19th c.), View and plan of Longwood House, 1817, Engraving

      Est: €50 - €75

Christian Ermer, View and plan of Longwood House, 1817, copper engraving Description: Engraving by Christian Ermer, numbered upper left: "Taf. 10", inscribed lower: "Ansicht und Plan von Longwoodhouse der Residenz Napoleons Bonaparte`s auf St. Helena.", handwritten addition: "1817". Very nice view of Longwood House on the island of St. Helena with a plan. Surrounded by palm trees and other tall trees, Longwood House lies at the foot of high mountains in an imposing location. Napoleon, who lived here in exile from 1815 until his death in 1821, may have felt differently. Due to its rugged coastline and remote location in the South Atlantic, the island of St. Helena remained uninhabited until the 16th century. It was not until 1502 that the Portuguese discovered the isolated island and named it after Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine. St. Helena is also inextricably linked with the name of Napoleon. Napoleon was exiled here from 1815 until his death in 1821, during which time he lived at Longwood House. Johann Christian Gottlieb Ermer (first mentioned around 1810, last mentioned in 1855 in Weimar) was an engraver and illustrator. He lived in Weimar and became a citizen of the city in 1814; he is listed in the address book there as late as 1855. He made numerous portraits of historical and contemporary personalities of the German high nobility, including Friedrich Hermann Otto von Hohenzollern-Hechingen. Book illustrations are also part of his work. Keywords: Romanticism, Engraving, Architecture, Germany
