Antonio María Esquivel Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1806 - d. 1857

Antonio María Esquivel y Suárez de Urbina (8 March 1806 - 9 April 1857) was a Spanish painter in the Romantic style who specialized in portraits.

Esquivel was born in Seville. His father was a cavalry officer who was killed at the Battle of Bailén in 1808.[2] He began his studies at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría in Seville. There, he became familiar with the pictorial techniques practiced by Murillo.

In 1831, already married and in need of work, he moved to Madrid and enrolled at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, becoming a merit scholar. He was also involved in the intellectual life of Madrid and, in 1837, was an active participant in founding the local "Artistic and Literary Lyceum", where he gave classes in anatomy, a subject that he would later teach at the San Fernando Academy.[2]

He returned to Seville in 1839, suffering from an illness that left him nearly blind. Deeply depressed, he tried to commit suicide by jumping into the Guadalquivir. Afterwards, his friends and colleagues at the Lyceum took up a collection[2] that would enable him to receive treatment from a famous ophthalmologist[who?] in France. Thanks to their support, by the end of 1840 he had recovered his vision.

His official recognitions include the "Commander's Cross" of the Order of Isabella the Catholic. In 1843, he was named Court painter and, in 1847, a Professor at the San Fernando Academy.[2] He was a founding member of the "Society for the Protection of the Fine Arts" and wrote a book on art theory: Tratado de Anatomía Pictórica. He died in Madrid, aged 51.

His sons Carlos (1830-1867) and Vicente (fl.1860s-70s) also became painters.

Attributed to ANTONIO MARÍA ESQUIVEL SUAREZ DE URBINA (Seville, 1806 - Madrid, 1857). "Saint Ursula. Oil on canvas. With illegible inscription on the back. Measurements: 93.5 x 73 cm; 103 x 84 cm (frame). This canvas shows Saint Ursula dressed as a maiden. According to medieval legend, a young girl named Ursula converted to Christianity promising to keep her virginity. As she was sought after by a Breton prince, she decided to make a pilgrimage to Rome and thus achieve the consecration of her vows. In Rome, she was received by Pope Siricius who blessed her and consecrated her vows of perpetual virginity to dedicate herself to the preaching of the Gospel of Christ. When she returned to Germany, she was surprised in Cologne by the attack of the Huns, in 451. Attila, king of this people, fell in love with her but the young woman resisted and, together with other maidens who refused to surrender to the sexual appetites of the barbarians, she was martyred. Due to its formal characteristics, this work can be attributed to Antonio Maria Esquivel, a Spanish painter and theorist appointed as Pintor de Cámara during the reign of Isabel II, who was recognized for his romantic style. Despite coming from a noble family, with the death of his father they find themselves in a precarious and difficult situation. However, his mother encouraged him to continue his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Seville, where he became familiar with the painting of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1618-1682). These studies were paralyzed by the invasion of the Hundred Thousand Sons of St. Louis, a military conflict that caused him to enlist in the liberal ranks to defend the square of Cadiz. In 1831 he resumed his studies and in 1831, as a pensioner in Madrid, he entered the general competition of the Academy, which named him an academician of merit. During his stay in the Spanish capital, he participated assiduously in the Artistic and Literary Lyceum, where he received anatomy classes. He also participated in the exhibitions of the Academy in 1835, 1837 and 1838.

Attributed to ANTONIO MARIA ESQUIVEL Y SUÁREZ DE URBINA (Seville, 1806 - Madrid, 1857). "Academic study". Oil on canvas. Relined. Provenance: Private collection in Belgium. With export permit. Size: 103 x 82 cm; 126 x 104 cm (frame). The portrait shows a physiognomy of the gentleman characterised with verism and detailed brushstrokes, with a miniaturist's pulse. A fig leaf covers his private parts. The moving posture breathes life into the body, which is aided by the pronounced musculature and the concentrated face, as each element is resolved with extreme precision. Esquivel was the most representative and prolific painter of Sevillian Romanticism and one of the most outstanding of his time in Spain. His life was a true Romantic plea; he lost his fortune after his father's death, was orphaned and left poor, and at the age of seventeen he enlisted against the absolutist cause of the Duke of Angoulême, and did not live comfortably until he moved to Madrid in 1831. However, in 1838 he returned to Seville, where he lost his sight shortly afterwards. Cured in 1840 he returned to Madrid, where he worked until his death. Trained at the Seville Academy of Fine Arts, he was appointed chamber painter in 1843 and a member of the San Fernando Royal Academy in 1847, contributed to the publications "El siglo XIX" and "El Panorama" and was a member of the Artistic and Literary Lyceum. He taught at the San Fernando Academy in Madrid, which led him to publish the monographs of José Elbo y Herrera el Viejo (1847) and his "Tratado de anatomía práctica" (1848). He was also an art critic and wrote on history painting and the German Nazarenes. As a painter he fully identified with Romanticism, which he expressed through the sentiment and aesthetic correctness of his work. His style, which is partly eclectic, is characterised by a great technical mastery that manages to harmoniously balance the correctness of the drawing and the quality of the colours. Although he dealt with a wide range of subjects, portraiture is an essential part of his career. In addition to his artistic merit, his portraits illustrate the society of his time with historical rigour, without neglecting affective values. He received many commissions for portraits in various formats, and also produced several self-portraits, one of which is in the Museo del Prado. He also executed group portraits, which reflect his fascination with the Dutch Baroque and his corporate portraits. With regard to religious themes, he was a follower of Murillo, in connection with his own status as a Sevillian. His history paintings had a very personal, literary and theatrical character, the result of the Romantic atmosphere in which he lived. His official awards include the plaque of the Siege of Cadiz and the Cross of Commander of the Order of Isabella the Catholic. In 2006, in commemoration of his second centenary, the Seville Academy of Fine Arts, in collaboration with the El Monte Foundation, held a retrospective exhibition dedicated to his work. He is represented in the Prado Museum, the Huesca Town Hall, the Lázaro Galdiano Museum, the Fine Arts Museum in Seville, the Romantic and Naval Museums in Madrid, the National Library and the Santa Cruz Museum in Toledo, among many others.

ANTONIO MARÍA ESQUIVEL Y SUÁREZ DE URBINA (Seville, 1806-Madrid, 1857) "The wife of Potiphar", 1849. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 123 x 91 cm; 158 x 127 cm (frame). Esquivel retakes in this magnificent painting the biblical episode that narrates the attempt of Potiphar's wife to seduce Joseph. The latter tries to flee from the embrace of the beautiful young woman, whose nudity reveals an agile and slender body. Joseph, dressed in tunic and cloak, tries not to look at her, adopting a gesture of rejection. Her sensual insinuation and frank nudity contrasts with his double layer of clothing and modesty. Since the Renaissance, this was a much treated theme, and Esquivel picks up that legacy by entering into a fruitful dialogue with tradition, as is usual in his best compositions. In the flesh tones ignited by passion, in the histrionic gestures and the satin finishes of the garments, Esquivel succeeds in reviving the sensuality of the Venetian school by infusing it with a romantic imprint. Potiphar, who was a high official belonging to the Pharaoh's court, had acquired Joseph, who had been sold into slavery. After his diligence, Potiphar, appointed Joseph head of the house, it was at that moment, when Potiphar's wife began to notice Joseph, trying to seduce him. Taking advantage of an occasion when the house did not have any of the men in charge, the woman insinuated herself to Joseph, who fled. However, upon Potiphar's return, the woman accused Joseph of attempted rape, for which Joseph was sent to jail. Esquivel was the most representative and prolific painter of Sevillian romanticism, and one of the most outstanding of his time in Spain. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts of Seville, he was appointed chamber painter in 1843 and academic of the Royal Academy of San Fernando in 1847, he collaborated with the publications "El siglo XIX" and "El Panorama" and was part of the Artistic and Literary Lyceum. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. Measurements: 128 x 94 cm; 161 x 124 cm (frame). The used illumination makes the whiteness of the feminine flesh tones stand out against the marked penumbra of the background, at the same time that it accentuates the chromatic sensation when contrasting with the intense blue of the dress. Her rounded face, with wide eyebrows and large features, is adorned with the typical hairstyle of the period, falling in ringlets over her hair. Despite the extraordinary delicacy with which the tactile qualities of the fabrics of the costume are treated, the portrait is resolved with a spirited and synthetic technique. Behind them a coat of arms reveals that it is of Doña Nicolasa Josefa Francisca de Aragón y Arias de Saavedra, married to Francisco Javier Mª Girón Ezpeleta las Casas y Enrile, with whom she had fourteen children. Aesthetically the work presents numerous stylistic similarities that can be found in the portraits of Pilar Gandiola or Amparo Romero, both by Esquivel and belonging to the collection of the Prado Museum in Madrid. Esquivel was an outstanding Spanish portraitist during the first half of the 19th century, thus becoming the master of the leading genre par excellence in painting, as a consequence of the new social structures that were implemented in the Western world throughout this century, embodying the maximum expression of the transformation of taste and mentality of the new clientele, which emerged between the nobility and the wealthy gentry, who would take the reins of history in this period. This genre embodies the permanent presence of the image of its protagonists, to be enjoyed in the intimacy of a studio, in the daily warmth of a family cabinet or presiding over the main rooms of the house. Esquivel was the most representative and prolific painter of Sevillian romanticism, and one of the most outstanding of his time in Spain. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Seville, he was appointed chamber painter in 1843 and member of the Royal Academy of San Fernando in 1847, collaborated with the publications "El siglo XIX" and "El Panorama" and was part of the Artistic and Literary Lyceum.

ANTONIO MARÍA ESQUIVEL Y SUÁREZ DE URBINA, (Seville, 1806 - Madrid, 1857). "Portrait of a young man. Oil on canvas. Signed on the right side. Measurements: 118 x 87 cm. In this canvas we see a clearly romantic portrait, marked by the emotion and far from the rigid schemes of the classical containment, based at the same time on a rigorous and masterly drawing, on which a very nuanced and sumptuous colouring is displayed. Esquivel here presents us with a beautiful portrait of soft elegance and very delicate chromaticism, dominated by a clear, fresh light that is especially reflected in the woman's face and her dress of sumptuous blue and white silk. Antonio María Esquivel was the most representative and prolific painter of Sevillian Romanticism and one of the most outstanding of his time in Spain. ANTONIO MARÍA ESQUIVEL Y SUÁREZ DE URBINA (Seville, 1806-Madrid, 1857) "Odalisca. Madrid, 1845. Oil on canvas. Signed, dated and located in the lower margin. Measurements: 103.5 x 142.5 cm; 112 x 151 cm (frame). We are before a work that establishes fruitful dialogues with the long tradition of the pictorial theme of odalisques (which began in the Italian Renaissance), and that at the same time foreshadows future interpretative solutions of the genre (Manet's irreverent Olympia). It is clear that Esquivel draws here from different sources: on the one hand, he is inspired by Venetian models (The Venus of Urbino, among others, where the nude young woman, lying on a soft bed, receives all the visual weight). The feminine canon, generously rounded, and even the idealised features of the woman, as well as the sensual chromatic plasticity, recall Tintoretto and other painters of the Cinquecento. The velvet drapery is a nod to the baroque tradition. However, the flesh tones of the nude tend towards a fully Romantic morbidity, and the atmosphere in which the body is set is also imbued with a characteristic mysterious nocturnal quality. The erotic charge of the scene is intensified by the black, turbaned servant who watches the sleeping damsel with fascination. His dark hand practically touches the nape of her neck, but she remains impassive. However, her eyelids are not quite closed, as if she knows she is being watched and is secretly enjoying the desire she arouses. All this, together with a masterly interplay of chiaroscuro and sublime satin shades, makes this painting exacerbate the senses and the intellect. Antonio María Esquivel was a Spanish painter of romantic themes and a great portraitist. He began his artistic training at the Santa Isabel School of Fine Arts in his native city, where he was a pupil of Francisco Gutiérrez and the gilder Francisco de Ojeda, although he had to interrupt it temporarily to take part in the defence of the Trocadero (1823) during the siege of Cadiz, for which he was awarded the cross and badge of the siege. After leaving the army he entered Sevillian artistic circles and from 1831, thanks to the protection of the British consul in Seville, he continued his studies at the school of the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid, where he spent most of his artistic activity. The following year he entered, together with José Gutiérrez de la Vega, the competition organised by that institution, where he was admitted as an academician of merit. In 1837 Esquivel made a decisive contribution to the establishment of the Liceo Artístico y Literario de Madrid and was associated with numerous contemporary poets, writers and actors, whom he portrayed individually and collectively. One of his best-known works is Reading Zorrilla in the Painter's Studio (1846), which depicts the poet José Zorrilla reciting his work before a large number of Romantic writers (over forty) gathered in his studio. In 1838 he temporarily lost his sight, but was able to recover thanks to the financial support of the Lyceum, to which he gave his work The Fall of Luzbel (1841) as a gift in gratitude. In that year he was appointed chamber painter and six years later was made a full member of the Royal Academy of San Fernando, where he taught as a lecturer in anatomy. He cultivated religious painting (a theme in which the influence of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo is evident), historical and mythological motifs and genre scenes. His fame, however, came from his activity as a portraitist, a facet in which he is considered one of the best specialists of the Romantic period. On arriving in Madrid he assimilated the style of Federico Madrazo and the circle of painters who monopolised the commissions, a change that was one of the keys to his success.
