William Etty RA (British, 1787-1849) Leander, study of a male nude seated on rocks oil on board 52.5 x 40.5cm Provenance: Sotheby's, Belgravia, 23rd May 1973, Lot 140 This work would have originated as an oil study of a male model seated on a posing block, almost certainly painted in the life-room at the Royal Academy. It was Etty's regular practice to develop such studies through the addition of invented settings and accessories to achieve ‘finished’, saleable pictures illustrating specific subjects – generally from myth, literature or history. In the present instance Etty has introduced shore, sea and sky, at the close of day, to set the stage for Leander of classical legend preparing for his nightly swim – perhaps the fateful one – across the Hellespont, from Abydos to Sestos, there to join his priestess lover, Hero. The artist has extended the area of the original millboard at top and right, probably to fit an existing frame. It is possible that Etty’s creation of a ‘Leander’ in this way was linked to his conceiving and exhibiting at the Royal Academy in the late 1820s two important pictures on the Hero and Leander theme (both now Tate collection): 'The Parting of Hero and Leander' (1827) and 'Hero having thrown herself from the tower at the sight of Leander drowned, dies on his body' (1829). William Etty RA (British, 1787-1849)

    Est: £4,000 - £6,000

William Etty RA (British, 1787-1849) Study of a female nude, illuminated by moonlight, with a floral still life oil on canvas 88 x 68cm Provenance: M. Newman Ltd., London This work is closely related to the smaller oil ‘Study of a Half-Nude Figure’ by Etty at Nottingham City Museum and Galleries (NCM 1904-31). It is likely that the Nottingham canvas provided the origin of the composition – as a life room study quickly worked up with the addition of an invented, freely painted landscape background to produce a marketable work, as was often Etty’s practice. The present painting is a more considered development of this composition with a specific subject, seemingly a mourner, in mind. This required a squarer canvas to accommodate the flowers arranged in a clear glass vase, an indication of recent death and a prominent feature in the composition. The scene is now appropriately set at night with moonlight falling on the mourner’s back. The painting related to another canvas by Etty at Nottingham known as ‘The Mourner’, similarly set at night and featuring a half-nude woman seen from behind, in this case glancing down towards a funerary urn. ‘The Mourner’ was presumably the work of that name included in the Etty’s one-man exhibition at the Society of Arts in 1849, the last year of his life, catalogued as painted in 1842. While Nottingham’s ‘The Mourner’ is suggestive of the world of classical antiquity, the present larger work would seem to be a parallel exploration of the same theme in more modern terms. We are grateful to Richard Green for his assistance with this catalogue entry.

WILLIAM ETTY (BRITISH 1787-1849), PORTRAIT OF THE ACTOR WILLIAM CHARLES MACREADY

    Est: £6,000 - £8,000

WILLIAM ETTY (BRITISH 1787-1849)PORTRAIT OF THE ACTOR WILLIAM CHARLES MACREADY APPARENTLY IN THE ROLE OF HAMLETOil on canvas93 x 70cm (36½ x 27½ in.)This portrait depicts the actor and theatre manager, William Charles Macready (1793-1873), known for his Shakespearian roles. Macready played Hamlet on numerous occasions during his successful and lengthy career, first performing the role in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1811, when he was just eighteen years old. It was also in Newcastle that he appeared opposite Mrs. Siddons (lot 131) when the latter offered him some parting words of advice: 'You are in the right way, but remember what I say: study, study and do not marry till you are thirty). He took on the by now established role of Hamlet again in Bath in 1814, and made his London debut at Covent Garden theatre as Hamlet in 1821. He was later to reprise the role in Paris to great acclaim in 1827 and 1844. Macready was famously hissed by his American counterpart, Edwin Forrest, whilst playing the protagonist in Edinburgh. This sparked a rivalry which came to emblematise Anglo-American social and class tensions that climaxed in the explosive 'Macready Riots' of 1849 at Astor Place, New York. Given the centrality of Macready's Hamlet to the international controversy, it was natural that the actor should want to portray himself confidently embodying the role. He had himself previously engraved as Hamlet for popular dissemination, as well as being painted by Daniel Maclise and William Etty and in his diary he recorded visiting Etty's studio where he was 'delighted with his gorgeous colours and ravishing forms'. William Etty (1787-1849) was the only important British painter before the 20th century to have dedicated his career to painting the nude and semi-nude. He was successful during his lifetime despite the censure of the press who accused him of indecency. His reputation was such that he was elected an associate of The Royal Academy (ARA) in 1824 and a full academician (RA) in 1828. He held a one-man exhibition at the Society of Arts in 1849, where he exhibited 133 of his pictures. Macready and Etty met when travelling in Italy in the 1820s and remained close friends after this chance encounter. Correspondence between the pair, now held in the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington D.C., includes letters from Etty to Macready dated 1838-1843 congratulating him on his performances in King Lear, Comus and Much Ado About Nothing.

Attributed to William Etty RA (1787-1849) after Titian

    Est: £700 - £1,000

Attributed to William Etty RA (1787-1849) after Titian The figure of Bacchus from Titian's Bacchus and Ariadne oil on canvas 76 x 55cm Provenance: Consigned by the granddaughter of the artist Warren Williams (1863-1941) This work derives from Titian's famous picture in The National Gallery, London. The original entered the collection in 1826, thenceforth being easily available to both the general public and copyists. Etty certainly knew and admired the work and his posthumous studio sale at Christie’s, 6-14th May 1850, included, as lot 631, a copy by him catalogued as 'Bacchus and Ariadne, after Titian’. In the late 1820s, the likely date of the present work, Etty was particularly interested in Bacchanalian subjects and greatly inspired by the prototypes of both Titian and Poussin. Around 1827, he himself acquired, from Lord Northwick, a copy of Titian’s Bacchanal of the Andrians which became one of his prized possessions. We are grateful to Richard Green for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.

36,7 cm x 24,2 cm. Attributed to William Etty (1787 - 1849). Oil on panel.

37 cm x 24,8 cm. Attributed to William Etty (1787 - 1849). Oil on panel.

    Est: €4,000 - €5,000

WILLIAM ETTY (York, Great Britain, 1787 - 1849). "Young woman at Rest, 1828. Oil on canvas glued to panel. It has craquelure and restorations on the pictorial surface. There are losses and damage to the frame. Signed and dated in the lower right area. Measurements: 57 x 78 cm; 75 x 96 cm (frame). No British painter of historical subjects has devoted himself to the representation of the human form as assiduously as William Etty, and in particular to the female nude. Among his contemporaries, who marvelled at the depth and corporeality of his figures, he was known and highly praised for his ability to capture the human form and reproduce flesh tones. Etty was born in York and left school at the age of twelve to work as an apprentice in a print shop. He completed his apprenticeship after seven years and moved to London, where in 1807 he began training at the Royal Academy under Thomas Lawrence. Despite the admiration of his contemporaries for his technical skill, such as his friend John Constable, Etty struggled to gain public recognition early in his career, and it was not until 1821, with the exhibition of Cleopatra's Arrival in Cilicia (National Museums Liverpool) at the Royal Academy, that he finally received the acclaim he craved. Critics marvelled at Cleopatra's "languid, exuberant beauty" and described the painting as belonging to the "highest class" of art. Etty followed this success by exhibiting a succession of important mythological works over the next few years, which established Etty as one of Britain's most important historical painters in the early 19th century. With the advent of the twentieth century, Etty's important contribution to British art had been almost entirely forgotten, and an Arts Council exhibition in 1954 sparked only a brief revival of interest. Today, however, unfettered by the dictates of 19th century artistic discourse and morality, we can appreciate the beauty of Etty's art for what it is. As explored in the recent exhibition "William Etty: Art & Controversy" at the York Art Gallery, Etty's art was the result of a lifetime of serious engagement with the traditions of European painting, dedication to the study of the pattern of life, and commitment to an independent artistic spirit.
