DE SCOTT EVANS "S.S. DAVID" (AMERICAN, 1847-1898) TROMPE L'OEIL PAINTING OF ALMONDS

            Est: $8,000 - $12,000

DE SCOTT EVANS "S.S. DAVID" (AMERICAN, 1847-1898) TROMPE L'OEIL PAINTING OF ALMONDS, oil on canvas, classic self-framed form with faux wood-grained edges, the composition featuring a precarious pile of almonds in a wooden niche behind a pane of jagged, broken glass, a card upper right inscribed "A New Variety / Try One", signed lower right "S. S. David", retaining a period printed merchant's label for "ATKINS ART STORE / 27 UNION SQUARE / NEW YORK" to backing board verso. Circa 1890. 12" x 10". Catalogue Note: Born in Boston, Indiana, De Scott Evans (1847-1898) studied as a young man under Albert Beaugureau in Cincinnati and, later, at the Academie Julien in Paris with William Adolphe Bougureau (1825-1905). Following his return to the United States, Evans taught at several institutions in Ohio and is known to have established a studio in Cleveland before moving permanently to New York City in order to pursue his artistic career full-time. Tragically, on a voyage to France where he was to begin work on a large commission, Evans and his young family died in the North Atlantic when their vessel collided with another.  De Scott Evans was one of several noteworthy 19th century American Trompe L'Oeil painters, a hyper-realistic style popular in the 1890s that was intended to "deceive" or "fool" the eye, often in a playful or humorous manner. Evans was a master of the form, and often signed his trompe l'oeil paintings with various pseudonyms, most often "S. S. David". The present example, completely fresh to the market, is an outstanding example of his rare work and demonstrates the artist's technical prowess as well as something of his sense of whimsy.

Oil On Canvas American Painting by Evans De Scott. Titled The entanglement. Signed Size 24 by 26 inches (61 by 66.7 cm.). With frame: 29 1/2 by 42 inches. De Scott Evans (March 28, 1847 – July 4, 1898) was an American painter known for working in a number of genres. Raised in Indiana, he spent much of his career in Ohio and then moved to New York City. His posthumous reputation is largely based on a number of trompe l'oeil still lifes that have been attributed to him. David Scott Evans was born in Boston, Indiana to David S. and Nancy A. (Davenport) Evans. His father was a physician. He attended Miami University's preparatory school in the 1860s, studying with professor Adrian Beaugureau at Miami and later in Cincinnati. Evans married Alice Josephine Burk in 1872. They had two biological daughters, Mabel and Blanche, and an adopted daughter, Laura. In 1873, he became head of the art department at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio, and taught there until 1875.[1] Evans then lived in Paris from 1877 to 1878, where he studied with Adolphe William Bouguereau.[1] He then taught from 1882 to 1887 at the Cleveland Academy of Art, and then moved to New York City in 1887, at the age of forty. Evans and his three daughters died in July 1898, when the Paris-bound steamer La Bourgogne was rammed by a sailing ship; 500 other passengers and crew were also lost. His wife was not on board and later remarried. There is a cenotaph for Evans and his daughters in the Oxford Cemetery in Oxford, Ohio.
