Adrianus Eversen Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Water colorist, b. 1818 - d. 1897

Adrianus Eversen (13 January 1818 – 1 December 1897) was a Dutch painter. Adrianus Eversen portrayed the typical 19th century Dutch atmosphere in his work. As a member of Arti et Amicitiae he belonged to the society of elite artists of his time.

Eversen was a contemporary of Cornelis Springer. Both painters were students of Hendrik Gerrit ten Cate at the same time, and usually painted contemporary regional (Oud-Hollandse) cityscapes. In his choice of subjects, Eversen allowed himself more freedom. He painted mostly imaginary cityscapes, consisting of existing and invented fragments, unlike the more faithful representations of Springer.

The everyday life of people, Dutch architecture, and the illumination effect of sunlight played a major role in his work.

One of his descendants was the painter Johannes Hendrik Eversen.

        Est: €50,000 - €70,000

Signed and dated lower right: AEversen 53 The Netherlands had a long tradition of veduta painting, dating back to the Golden Age during the 17th century. In the first half of the 19th century, an entire generation of Romantic artists was able to build on this tradition and - literally - depict the large and small cities of their homeland in a new light. Adrianus Eversen - born in 1818 and thus one year younger than Cornelis Springer - belonged to this generation. His vedutas show the cities in an idealised way and evoke the Golden Age, when the Netherlands achieved immeasurable wealth and the arts flourished. This idealised, sometimes nostalgic view is also evident in Eversen's view of Bruges and Enkhuizen. The Belfry of Bruges is bathed in a warm evening light, while the characteristic gabled houses with their coloured bricks can be seen in the foreground. Here, as in the view of Enkhuyzen (lot 20), the foreground is dominated by a wide street, which serves as a stage for the figural staffage and at the same time invites the viewer to immerse themselves in the cityscape - and in an old, better time. WINTERLICHE STADT MIT KIRCHE Öl auf Mahagoni. 33,4 x 26,2 cm. Rechts unten ligiertes Monogramm „AE“, links unten kursiv signiert „A.Eversen“. Literatur: Vgl. Each monogrammed and dated lower left: AE 55 These two cityscapes are an important addition to Adrianus Eversen's oeuvre. They are not listed in Pieter Overduin's catalogue raisonné. Dated 1855, they fall into a period in which Everson painted in great detail. Typical of Everson's light-flooded vedutas is the use of warm colours and the focus on the bustling activity of the figures. In contrast to his teacher Cornelis Springer, whose most talented pupil he was, Eversen painted less realistic depictions of buildings and neighbourhoods, instead creating harmonious views like the two offered here by combining existing with invented elements. Eversen used the churches, patrician halls and town halls and the civic buildings he saw on his travels as motifs. He enlivened his views with scenes from the everyday life of the citizens living in these towns and thus bore witness to their customs and traditions. His city views, some of which are authentically reproduced, are works which, from today's perspective, also represent a contemporary document of the return to the cityscape as a motif in the mid-19th century.

        Est: €1,000 - €1,200

EVERSEN, ADRIANUS 1818 Amsterdam - 1897 Delft Title: Little Dutch Town at the River. Technique: Oil on canvas. Mounting: Laid on fibreboard. Measurement: 37.5 x 55.5cm. Notation: Monogrammed lower right: A.E. Frame: Framed. The Dutch veduta painter Adrianus Eversen was born in Amsterdam in 1818 and studied with the architecture and veduta painters Cornelis de Kruyff and Cornelis Springer. As with his fellow painter Willem Koekkoek, who was ten years younger, Springer's influence is particularly noticeable in the paintings, which are rich in detail and atmospheric with their warm colours. In contrast to their realist cityscapes Everson, however, creates compositionally idealised scenes with harmoniously matching colours and skillful play of light. As a result, architecture and landscape are in balanced harmony. The city view shown here represents precisely this form of composition which is characteristic of Eversen. The left front area of the picture appears almost illuminated and is thus the first to come into focus. The buildings and ships that are behind are kept darker and serve the building up of tension as pendant to the bright city and to the sky in the background. The effect of the warm colour palette as well as the play with light generate an almost idyllic atmosphere from which the spectator cannot withdraw. Öl/Lwd.; R. u. sign.; 37,5 cm x 47 cm. Rahmen. Provenienz: Aus der Auflösung der Privatsammlung Horst Abke, Springe; Erworben 2001 bei Kunstzalen A. Vecht, Amsterdam. Oil on canvas. Signed.

Figures in a Sunlit Dutch Town Signed lower left Oil on canvas, 32.3 x 39.2 cm Provenance: Private collection, the Netherlands Note: Adrianus Eversen is celebrated for his evocative depictions of nineteenth century Dutch ambiance. As a distinguished member of Arti et Amicitiae, he belonged to an esteemed society of artists of his era. Eversen's artistic journey began under the tutelage of Cornelis de Kruyff (1771-1854), who introduced him to the art of painting old Dutch cityscapes. He further honed his skills through study under Cornelis Springer (1817-1891), the revered master of Dutch town views at the time. While both painters focused on Dutch cityscapes, Eversen embraced greater artistic freedom by primarily creating imaginary compositions that combined existing and invented elements, in contrast to Springer's more faithful representations. Eversen's works showcased a brilliant sense of composition, a warm colour palette, as well as a mastery of intricate details. This particular painting exemplifies Eversen's distinctive style, as it skilfully captures the interplay of sunlight, shadows, atmosphere, and the vibrant daily life within a town. * Please note: condition reports and additional photos are available upon request. Sunlit Harbour Town Signed lower right Oil on panel, 28 x 41.3 cm Provenance: - European Fine Art Centre, Gulpen, 2009 - Private collection, the Netherlands Literature: P. Overduin, Adrianus Eversen 1818-1879. Schilder van stads- en dorpsgezichten, Wijk en Aalburg, 2010, p. 219, cat. no. 28-15 (ill.) Note: Adrianus Eversen was a Dutch painter who is best known for portraying the typical 19th-century Dutch atmosphere in his work. With his brilliant use of compositional structure and a warm colour scheme, Eversen depicted a view of presumably Harderwijk in this current lot. As can be seen from this painting, Eversen is a master at painting elaborate details, the expression of atmosphere, and the everyday life of people in a town. Therefore, this work on offer is an excellent example of Eversen’s balanced style. * Condition report available upon request
