VALIE EXPORT (* 1940) | ‘Konfigurationsstudie’, 1973 | RC vintage silver print, 30,2 x 40,2 cm Signed by the artist in ink and oval “VALIE EXPORT” stamp in the image lower right, titled and dated in ink in the image right LITERATURE VALIE EXPORT, Körpersplitter. Bd. 1, Konfigurationen. Fotografien 1968-77, Wien 1980, p. 22. The Austrian media artist pursues a critical approach by positioning herself in architectural and landscape spaces, taking photographs and accentuating the prints graphically. In doing so, she inscribes the female body in image structures determined by patriarchal visual conventions and attempts to break them up. The photographic work on offer belongs to the series of “Configuration Studies”, also known under the title “Handfiguration”, in which EXPORT disturbs the totality of the pictorial space organised in central perspective, which is considered phallocentric in the feminist approach, by literally intervening into it.

Fotografien 1968-77, Linz: Edition Neue Texte 1980, p. 43. In her series »Körperkonfigurationen« (body configurations), VALIE EXPORT questiones body language - as a gender-specific, socially and historically coded concept. The Austrian media artist pursues a critical practice by positioning herself into architectural and landscape environments, taking photographs and graphically accentuating the prints. In doing so, she inscribes the female body in a pictorial space determined by patriarchal visual conventions and attempts to break up these structures. | Austrian & German Photography

Eine Auswahl von Dr. Andreas Beitin, ZKM, aus der Teutloff Photo + Video Collection, ed. by Lutz Teutloff, Oldenburg 2014, ill. p. 138 Dimensions: 107 x 71.5 cm Very good condition Provenance: Collection Teutloff, Germany During the performance ‘Bodysign’ in 1970, Valie Export had tattooed a garter on her thigh On July 2, 1970, Valie Export had tattooed a garter on her thigh on a stage in Frankfurt, underscoring the radical nature of her feminist art performances. The garter, a symbol of male fantasies, reveals the role of women as sexual objects. At the same time, the human body becomes a symbol and information carrier for other people and an art object itself. 4 gelatin silver print on baryta paper Austria, 1971 (later prints from 1996) Valie Export (born 1940) - Austrian media and performance artist Each signed and dated ‘Valie Export 1971/1996’, numbered ‘18/25’ and titled ‘EROS/ION" in black felt-tip pen on the reverse Photographer: M. Clay / H. Hendrich Documentation of the performance ‘EROS/ION’, which took place in 1971 at the Electric Cinema in Amsterdam and in other places Image dimensions: c. 31 x 47.5 cm; sheet dimensions: 50 x 60 cm Provenance: Private property, Austria Export has called the performance a ‘body-material-interaction’, by using her body as a transmitter of characters and cultural traces (material) The performance ‘Eros/ion’ examined the relationship between social characters and body, that means between culture resp. material and body. Export wallowed naked in broken glass, then on a glass plate and afterwards on paper. The traces that brought the broken glass on her skin left painterly traces on the paper. Thus, the glass fragments became traces of an aesthetic process. At the same time, their meaning, as well as the one of the body, was transformed. In so doing, Export demonstrated by how the concept of art can be expanded, and the reality can be transformed by art. Condition:  The photographs are in very good condition, showing only the lightest wear from storage. The size of the images is c. 31.7 x 47.5 cm, while the sheets measure 50 x 60 cm.  Valie Export (b. 1940) Born as Waltraud Lehner in Linz, Valie Export attended the local Arts and Crafts School from 1955 to 1958.
