Steegman (according to the inscribed labels attached to the reverse of the frame); private collection and thence by descent Note: this is a brilliant example of the Turkish artist modernist style inspired by the folk art of the region. Eyüboğlu studied with Andre Lhote in Paris in the 1930s, where he met his wife, the painter and ceramicist Eren Eyüboğlu. He exhibited with the D Group of painters starting in 1936 and founded the Group of 10. Public commissions included stain glass windows for the Embassy of Turkey in Bonn, frescoes for the Lido Restaurant in Istanbul in 1943 and a large panel he designed for the Ankara Opera House in 1946.

The relief-like surface seems to be created with a spatula or painted. A closer look, however, brings light to the actual manufacturing process. Eyüboğlu follows the style of geometric abstraction. The interplay of colors and shapes becomes the primary parameter of content. The work is signed and dated upper right 'B. Rahmi 1960'. On the back is the artist's name, date and title of the work, 'Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu 1960 Clef Turque'. The work is in good condition with some signs of age and wear. Along the margin there are some tears (repaired on the back). The sheet is matted and framed in a blue wooden frame that shows minor signs of wear as well. The overall framed dimensions are 80 x 64 cm. The sheet measures 71.5 x 56 cm. Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu (1911-1975) Born in 1911, Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu was one of the founding members of the so-called 'D Group' in 1933, who distanced themselves from the older generation of artists and promoted the development of contemporary art. The artists of the group used new techniques and introduced new motifs, such as themes from the Anatolian region. The 'D Group' rejected the Impressionist style of the Istanbul School represented by artists such as Ibrahim Calli or Hamdi Bey. Instead of the soft shimmering depictions of the Bosphorus, they created hard, geometric lines and abstract curves that were perceived as provocative at that time. From 1937 onwards, Eyüboğlu worked as an assistant of Leopold Levy at the Istanbul Academy. Eyüboğlu should remain at the Academy until his death in 1975. He not only worked as a painter, but also created frescoes, stained glass windows, mosaics and woodcuts. In 1960, he created a work for the NATO headquarters in Paris (now in Brussels). Many of his works are shown in major museum collections in Turkey, but also in the U.S. and in Europe.
