BEATLES THE: Vintage signed colour 12 x 9 photograph by all four members of The Beatles individually

          Est: £2,000 - £3,000

BEATLES THE: Vintage signed colour 12 x 9 photograph by all four members of The Beatles individually, comprising John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, the cardstock image published by PYX (c.1963/64) depicts the Fab Four in a head and shoulders group pose together, each wearing pink shirts and plain dark ties and holding red roses. Signed by each of the band members in blue inks with their names alone to largely clear areas of the image. A heavy vertical central fold only very slightly affects the first letter of Starr's signature and with some extensive surface and corner creasing to the image, very slightly affecting McCartney's signature, and with a couple of small tears to the edges. FR Provenance: The signatures were obtained in person by Frank Gummer, a relation of the vendor, who was employed as the manager of Sheffield City Hall in the 1960s. The Beatles performed live at Sheffield City Hall on three occasions, 16th March & 2nd November 1963 and 9th November 1964, and it is believed that the signatures were obtained at the latter of these shows. Ringo Starr Beatles vintage stage-worn D. A. Millings custom-made suit.

          Est: $15,000 - $20,000

Ringo Starr Beatles vintage stage-worn D. A. Millings custom-made suit. (c. 1963) “The Fab Four” lads from Liverpool emerged in the 60s not only as Rock & Roll royalty, but as fashion trendsetters climbing to the top of the pop charts as clean-cut “Mods” in mop-top haircuts and signature tailored, collarless suits like this one. In A Hard Days Night (1964), when a reporter asks Ringo if he’s a Mod or a Rocker, Starr replies, “I’m a Mocker”. D.A. “Dougie” Millings and his son Gordon made over 500 suits for The Beatles for stage, screen, photo shoots, and personal use. Considered The Beatles’ “house tailor” from 1962 – 1967, Dougie Millings (affectionately referred to as “Dad” by the band) even appears as a frustrated tailor attempting to measure the squirming boys in A Hard Days Night. This custom-made Ringo Starr stage-worn suit consists of (1) Beige wool collarless jacket, accented with black piping on edges and pockets, black interior lining and 3-button front closure and (1) Matching pair of beige, stovepipe pants with zipper front closure. This distinct collarless, slim-fitted suit design would become synonymous with the early look of The Beatles. Both garments retain the internal D. A. Millings & Son bias labels with handwritten “Ringo Starr / The Beatles”. Both garments remain in stage-worn, very good condition. Accompanied by an LOA from tailor Gordon Millings.

Signed Beatles Arriving in NY 1964 Photo

          Est: $8,000 - $10,000

Scottish photographer Harry Benson accompanied the mop-topped Fab Four on their explosive first trip to the States. He was there on the plane from London to New York. He was there on the media-filled tarmac. He was there for the hotel pillow fights. He was there on the Ed Sullivan Show set for that earth-shattering televised performance of "I Want to Hold Your Hand." But of all his captivating Beatles photographs between 1964 and 1966, it is arguably this one, of the band hamming it up as they descend onto American soil for the very first time, that is most historically significant—and rightly so. Throngs of reporters and photojournalists line the barriers, police officers patrol the cordoned-off area (one officer seemingly smirking at these silly British mods), and fans in the distance angle for the best view. Meanwhile, John, Paul, George, and Ringo haven't even stepped off the staircase and already they're having a ball, mugging for their friend Harry Benson. Years later, the iconic image was featured in Life Books' 100 Photographs That Changed the World, even meriting the prominent top-center slot on the cover montage. Presented here is a beatific behemoth of a print from Benson's original negative. The glistening, silver-gelatin photograph measures more than three feet across and two feet tall (26" x 40, to be exact), and it is strikingly framed to dimensions of 34-1/4" x 45-1/2". Benson's handwriting across the bottom margin offers the title, limited-edition number (out of 35 produced) and signature: "Beatles Arriving New York 1964 - 7/35 - Harry Benson." To our understanding, Benson retained for himself the first six photographs in the run, making this seventh example the very first to be made publicly available. Accompanying the mesmerizing display piece is an autographed copy of Benson's retrospective Once There Was a Way... (Abrams, 2003), in which Benson—who has photographed every sitting U.S. President as well as covered Bobby Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., the Berlin Wall, and Hurricane Katrina—described the circumstances of the photograph as follows: "Certainly the gray tarmac at Idlewild on the afternoon of February 7, 1964, looked to us like the greenest field in creation. I was behind the four Beatles when we disembarked and I had asked them to wave up at me for a picture. They almost forgot, but Ringo remembered and made them turn around. The crowds of screaming girls holding welcoming signs—some with the word Beatles misspelled—had been held back behind police barriers, so there was no hysteria on the ground. I didn't bother to develop the film. I threw it in a bag in my closet and found it again about fifteen years ago. I'm glad I did, as it was an historic day." Historic, indeed, for once the Beatles landed in America—as we see them here—the world was changed forever. Please Note: Due to the size and/or weight of this lot, the cost of shipping may be substantial.

          1963 Beatles Swedish Playbill

The Beatles didn't just take the United Kingdom and the United States by storm in the early 1960s ... they took the world. In October 1963, the Fab Four traveled to Sweden to perform as part of a four-day pop music festival. Offered is a 6-1/4" x 11-1/4" playbill from that concert, displaying an image of the Beatles along the top half of the advertisement and touting them as "Europas Populäraste Pop-Band." The play bill projects a NM/MT appearance with just a hint of handling wear touching the bottom border.
