JOHN FAED R.S.A. (SCOTTISH 1819-1902) 'LOOK AFTER THE PENNIES' Signed, oil on canvas (61cm x 76cm (24in x 30in)) Provenance: Private collection, Scotland Note: John Faed was born near Gatehouse of Fleet, Kirkcudbrightshire. Artistic talent emerged early and between the ages of 11 and 12 he worked as an itinerant miniature painter fulfilling portrait commissions for Galloway aristocracy. In his late teens Faed moved to Edinburgh to study at the Trustees Academy, and was soon regularly exhibiting portraits and historical and genre scenes at the Royal Scottish Academy. Many of his compositions derived from the works of William Shakespeare, as well as Walter Scott and Robert Burns; more still depict characters and scenes inspired by his native Dumfries and Galloway. Look After the Pennies is set within a humble domestic interior, and demonstrates Faed’s exquisite handling of light and shade to articulate form: delightful details such as the soft light on the boy’s green woollen beret, the older woman’s hands, and the dust on the well-used spinning wheel exemplify his mastery. Faed’s paintings proved immensely popular to a Victorian audience in Britain, and he also had a significant following in the United States, in acknowledgment of which he painted an important posthumous equestrian portrait of George Washington (1856). Faed’s siblings James (1821-1911), Thomas (1826–1900) and Susan (1827–1909) were also successful artists.

John Faed Royal Scottish Acadaemy Oil on Canvas Titled "The Practice". Signed.John Faed was a self-taught artist and received early encouragement from an Edinburgh collector who had settled locally. He painted miniatures until 1840, when he moved to Edinburgh, and he attended classes at the Trustees' Academy there. Being hard-working and cautious he continued in the 'cramped minuteness' of miniature painting against his true inclination. The Evening Hour (Children of Dr Archibald Bennie) (1847; Edinburgh, National Gallery), painted on a piece of ivory 330×241 mm, shows his portrait style at the height of his success as a miniaturist. By the late 1840s he had begun to exhibit oils at the Royal Scottish Academy, of which the Trysting Place (1848; Glasgow, Art Gallery & Museum) was among his earliest. During the 1850s he received two commissions from the Royal Association for the Promotion of the Fine Arts in Scotland for illustrations to Robert Burns, including Tam O'Shanter (1856). A Wappenschaw (1863; Edinburgh, Offices of the NT Scotland), an ambitious work depicting a feudal shooting contest with some 40 figures. In 1864 John followed his brother Thomas Faed to London. In later life John was free to indulge his early ambition to become a history painter. In order to paint the Warning before Flodden (1875; Wolverhampton, Art Gallery), he first borrowed historical costumes from Mme Tussaud's waxworks. He settled at Gatehouse in 1880. The present work would appear to be an accomplished copy of this composition that presumably met with Faed's approval.
