(St. Martin/Lofer 1887–1930 Vienna) “Stilleben mit Krug” (Still life with jug), c. 1912, on the stretcher titled and dated 1912 and further inscribed “Faistauer Privatbesitz, Wien” and “Eigentumer Lehrer Grasmayr, Salzburg Mönchsberg”, oil on canvas (mounted upside down on stretcher), 60 x 75 cm, framed Provenance: Magda Mautner von Markhof (Vienna 1881–1944 Salzburg), married since 1914 to Alois Grasmayr (1876 Hohenzell – 1953 Salzburg) - passed to his heirs - Family Collection We are grateful to Dr. Nikolaus Schaffer, Salzburg for confirming the authenticity and the information on the provenance. Faistauer only got to know Alois Grasmayr around 1920, but was well acquainted with his wife, Magda Mautner-Markhof from an early age. She may have acquired the painting earlier. Compare: Franz Fuhrmann, Anton Faistauer, Residenz Verlag, 1972, cat. no. 83: Still life with beer jug, very similar in composition and with the same jug. It is a real stroke of luck that full consciousness is unnecessary in order to absorb. Quite unconsciously, what I had seen sank into my inner self and now, often conveyed by present experience, it emerges into consciousness from an unsuspected reservoir. I experienced a Gauguin exhibition at Miethke's in the last year of the academy course which made an uncannily strong impression on me. I couldn't fully grasp things, it was all too new and strange. I carried the things around in me for a long time. At the same time I met Franz Wiegele and Kolig, who also studied at the Academy in Vienna. They inspired extraordinary respect in me. I had the feeling that they were already very much involved in what I yet longed for. I was impressed by Wiegele's strict classical drawing and the extraordinary strength and tenacity of his endeavours. I learned a lot from him about art books. His studio always had photos of ancient and Gothic sculpture. I was able to learn about pictures from him. Until then, I had only viewed as a connoisseur. From then on, I focused museums and became sceptical of one-day exhibitions. Kolig was much closer to my own problem at the time. He was concerned with colour as was I, and approached the material boldly and with great extravagance. Later I would get more out of Wiegele. I saw the first two very important Viennese art shows with him as well as everything French worth seeing at Miethke's and later at Arnot's. I only observed Kokoschka's development from a distance. He had a big head start. I initially rejected him altogether. Early Kokoschka was rather embarrassing for me. I was organised quite differently and couldn't make anything of an analytical big-city psyche. Nevertheless, he held our first important exhibition in the Hagenbund in 1910: the special exhibition that launched the new approach to painting in Vienna, leaving Klimt’s influence behind. My first large painting was shown at this exhibition: a Nativity 3:3 [= 3 x 3 m], in which I strove for a goal that I still pursue today. At that time, I had the great Venetians in mind, their colourfulness, their colour composition, their earthly nature. Two years later I discovered Cézanne, and then tried very hard to imitate only him... Anton Faistauer, from: Anton Faistauer. Anton Faistauer Blumen in Henkelkrug vor Bild 1915 oil on canvas; framed 67 x 53 cm signed and dated on the upper right: A. Faistauer / 1915 private property, Austria Franz Fuhrmann, Anton Faistauer 1887-1930, mit einem Werkverzeichnis der Gemälde, Salzburg 1972, no. 29 (b/w-ill., wrong dimensions) Anton Faistauer was one of those artists who found their artistic path at an early age. Already before the First World War, Anton Faistauer had become very successful and had a good contact network of important collectors and art lovers. In 1909, together with Egon Schiele, Anton Peschka, Robin Christian Andersen, Franz Wiegele, Hans Böhler and others, he founded the "Neukunst-Gruppe" ("New Art Group"), who all left the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in protest against the conservative art establishment. In December 1909, the first exhibition of the young avant-garde group, led by Faistauer and Schiele, was held at the Pisko Gallery at Schwarzenbergplatz, Vienna. Further exhibitions of the Neukunst-Gruppe were held in Prague in 1910, and in Vienna in 1911 as part of the Hagenbund’s spring exhibition, which was a groundbreaking event for modernism. The Österreichische Galerie first purchased a painting by this important Austrian Expressionist in 1913. After turning away from the two-dimensional style of Art Nouveau, Faistauer studied the work of Paul Cezanne, the most prominent proponent of French modernism, and thus found his own artistic language. His portraits, landscapes and still lifes draw their power from expressive colours, a preference for dark, mysterious hues with agitated, dynamic brushstrokes. Our flower still life from 1915 is characterised by the illusionist artifice of the picture-within-a-picture motif. Faistauer cleverly places his signature and the date in the upper right corner, in the still life of fruit that is hanging on the wall and partly cut off by the edge of the picture – a finely calculated, self-reflective reference to the painter and his oeuvre. Within early Austrian modernism, Anton Faistauer sought a balance between sober form and emotional colour, between spatial plasticity and abstracting flatness, like no other artist and subordinated every motif to this painterly problem. Faistauer’s “harmonism functions in such a way that the components do not merge completely with each other but keep each other in check like weight and counterweight. It is a harmony gained from contradictions.” Nikolaus Schaffer, quoted in: exhibition catalogue, Salzburg Museum, 2005, p. 51

He understood his painting as an intermediate stage where random appearances meet the objective realm of ideas. Particularly in his portraits of women, the fine balance between autonomous, powerful application of paint and subtle as well as unambiguous boundaries of form is evident. Clear, "lawful" structures versus haunting tonal colour painting lead to that special melancholy of the indeterminate that gives Faistauer's female portraits their own poetry of rapt sensuality.

This former annexe of Mönchsberg Castle, demolished in 1930, offered him a wide panoramic view of the city, which is captured in this painting. “Pictures have the task of opening up the mystery of nature to mankind. They should be able to appropriate the richness, the space, the depth and heaviness of the cosmos for mankind, to arbitrate the chaos and to open paths into the spirit of creation.“ Anton Faistauer

Rahmen. Considered the most important Salzburg painter of modernism. 1904 to 1906 at the private painting school of R. Scheffers, 1906 to 1909 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Alois Delug and Christian Griepenkerl. 1909 together with Egon Schiele, Anton Kolig, Robin Christian Andersen udn Franz Wiegele founded the Neukunstgruppe. Exhibitions at the Kunstsalon Pisko, in Budapest, Munich and in Vienna at the Hagenbund. 1913 Marries Robin Christian Andersen's sister, in the same year exhibits at the Miehtke Gallery. 1919 in Salzburg with Felix A. Harta founding of the artist group Wassermann. Design of the frescoes for the Salzburg Festspielhaus. Intensive study of the works of Paul Cezanne, development of a moderate Expressionism. Created mainly landscapes, still lifes and portraits. Designed the poster for the 1917 exhibition of Austrian art at Liljevalchs Kunsthalle in Stockholm, Sweden. Exhibited there alongside Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka and Anton Hanak as the main representatives of the Austrian moeder. The design shows a simplified version of a portrait of his wife Ida. At the end of August 1917, a train journey lasting several days brought six travelers from Vienna to the capital of neutral Sweden, a playground for agents, reformers and revolutionaries and a few weeks earlier the scene of the Peace Conference of the Second International, which had remained ineffective. The tour group consisted of key protagonists of the Austrian art scene: Albin Egger-Lienz, Anton Faistauer, Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele and Anton Hanak. Under the guidance of the architect Josef Hoffmann, the artists worked from September 3rd to 6th on the construction of the "Österrikisk Konstutställning", consisting of approx. 650 exhibits, which is scheduled to open on September 8th in the new Liljevalchs Konsthall for contemporary art and is part of a "Austrian Week” with readings, concerts and fashion shows. This largely forgotten charm offensive by the young Emperor Karl's government was intended to show that Austria had lost none of its creative power despite the war. The propaganda show was organized by Karl Bittner, commercial attaché of the Austro-Hungarian Embassy, originally not on behalf of the k. u.k. (“imperial and royal”, referring to the Habsburgs dual monarchy Austria-Hungary) Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but of the k. u.k. Ministry of War, or the War Press Quarters. Organization and selection of the works of art were entrusted to Josef Hoffmann. After an initial wrangling over competences between civil and military authorities, the project was finally handed over completely to civilian hands through Bittner's mediation. In order to save face, the War Ministry put forward the much-invoked Austro-Hungarian parity as the alleged reason. Anton Faistauer was entrusted with designing the exhibition poster. The final version, a lithograph, shows a young woman in a high-necked dress, seated, in semi-profile, her hands resting loosely on her thighs. She looks serious but confident. Faistauer's design comes very close to the end result; except that the dress is blue instead of red and the woman bows her head shyly. Faistauer has not yet completely mastered the draft of the Swedish text. It simply doesn't fit all the letters of "ÖSTERRIKISK KONSTUTSTÄLLNING i Liljevachs-Konsthall". He blurred the word "SEPTEMBER" and thus already corrected it to the final "SEPT". The daily opening hours will be shortened to “10 a.m. – 4 a.m.”. The bourgeois simplicity of the seated female figure and the poster design as a whole are an example of the conflict between civil society and the military power that was becoming increasingly apparent in the penultimate year of the war, as well as the longing for peace of the population oppressed by the war. Faistauer's pastel drawing is a fascinating historical document of this little-known major cultural and political offensive of the tottering empire. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. My fighting spirit has disappeared after I gave up trying to win the market over. My wares cost me a lot more than they can be worth to the buyer. Now I would rather perish than go out into the street; I would rather perish than let Mr so-and-so hang one of my paintings, even a small one, on a free nail on the wall above his desk, so that it fits in with the surrounding kitsch. I hate the market, the piecework for the buyer. I’d rather strangle myself with my own hands than have a bad painting bought cheaply. I may value others very highly because they do not buy juvenile works. I respect those who do not overestimate my work. I mock anyone who talks about its originality, genius, temperament or even power. Youth work in the arts is a sport. It should be: watch and practice. Every jump can bring death. So plausible! Only a lame man can claim that the youth possess motor power. I don’t want to break a leg or bend over and jump to the delight of a stupid old man who notes the jump, and goes to write that he has seen a young old man. Our shortcomings are our assets.” A.
