Henri Fantin-Latour (Grenoble, 1836 – Buré, 1904) - La Vérité (The Truth)

Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 101 × 81 cm (unframed), 125 × 106 cm (framed). Remains of a label on the back, "E.J. Van Wisselingh and Co., Amsterdam". Henri Fantin-Latour (Grenoble, 1836 – Buré, 1904) was a French painter and engraver, initially trained by his father and later at the École de Dessin in Paris. His true school was the Louvre, where he studied the great Venetian masters. In 1861 he briefly studied with Courbet, although he developed a more intimate and restrained style. His friendship with James Whistler took him to England, where he achieved great success with his still lifes and floral compositions, comparable to 17th-century Dutch painting. He exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1861 and, although close to figures such as Manet, refused to join the Impressionist group. From 1870 onwards, his work became more symbolic and was influenced by the music of Schumann, Brahms, and Wagner. He died in Buré, where he had lived with his wife since the 1870s. From the 1860s onwards, Henri Fantin-Latour created numberous floral still lifes, among which the painting offered here is an outstanding example in several respects. Fantin-Latour shows us a flower arrangement of red and white carnations, many of which are already in full bloom. Other flowers are yet in their buds, about to reveal their beauty. The subtle drama thus created is further heightened by the painter's quick yet precise brushwork. The delicate colors of the flowers, which differ strikingly with the dark background of the picture, are effectively highlighted. Ab den 1860er Jahren schafft Henri Fantin-Latour eine Vielzahl von Blumenstillleben, von denen das hier angebotene Gemälde ein in mehrerlei Hinsicht herausragendes Beispiel darstellt. Fantin-Latour zeigt uns ein Blumenarrangement aus roten und weissen Nelken, viele davon bereits in voller Blütenpracht. Andere der Blumen hingegen stecken noch in ihren Knospen und sind unmittelbar davor, ihre Schönheit zu entfalten. Die dadurch erzeugte subtile Dynamik wird durch die schnelle und doch präzise Pinselführung des Malers zusätzlich unterstrichen. Die zarten Farben der Blüten, die kontrastreich gegen den dunklen Bildhintergrund gestellt sind, kommen wirkungsvoll zur Geltung. "Œillets" entsteht im Jahre 1904 – kurz vor dem Ableben des Malers – und veranschaulicht, wie Fantin-Latour die Blumenmalerei im Laufe seines künstlerischen Werdegangs perfektioniert hat. Dieses mit * (Asterisk) bezeichnete Objekte ist vollumfänglich mehrwertsteuerpflichtig, d. h. bei diesen Objekten wird die MWST auf den Zuschlagspreis plus Aufgeld berechnet.
